Hazel (2934 KP) rated Kill A Stranger in Books
Nov 29, 2020
What we have here is a gripping and twisty plot of secrets and lies which is full of twists and turns that keep you guessing to the very end. Written at a strong pace, this book will have you turning the pages and your head spinning trying to work out just what the heck is going on ... in the way good thrillers do!
The cast of characters aren't particularly likeable, to the point where you don't really care what happens to any of them and actually look forward to them getting their comeuppance, but they are interesting and well developed and perfect for the story line.
Highly recommended for Simon Kernick fans and lovers of action packed thrillers that make you use your brain.
Thanks must go to Headline and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review.
Leanne Crabtree (480 KP) rated Widdershins (Whyborne & Griffin, #1) in Books
Sep 6, 2019
I'm a bit picky with my historical reads. But since this would be my first full length mm historical romance, I thought I'd give it a go. And it turned into something I really enjoyed. It was paranormal and action packed and romantic. I couldn't ask for more, really.
I really liked both Griffin and Whyborne. Griffin was the sort of bad boy of the Victorian era I would never have guessed existed and Whyborne was the smart, bookish type that liked to be invisible to everyone around him. Except that wasn't possible with Griffin. He noticed him and accepted him and it was kinda sweet.
The storyline was very engaging and I was continually cheering my two guys on to figure it out and to get that person or other. And at the end I almost cried. I cant go into details without spoiling it but this is not some boring, average historical fiction based mm romance. It's very good.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2456 KP) rated What Happened at Midnight in Books
Aug 27, 2020
I remember as a kid the title really intriguing me. Yes, several scenes take place at midnight, but the title isn’t as relevant to the story as it might be. That hardly matters since the story is so action packed that it is hard to put it down. Coincidence rules quite a bit, and the characters are thin. Elements are also very dated today. So in other words, it’s a typical Hardy Boys book. Still, I take that into account when I pick up one of these books, and I enjoy the nostalgia I get from revisiting these old friends.
When I pick up a Nancy Drew book, I expect coincidence to drive the plot a little. Here, there was so much of it early on that it was hard to overlook it. Fortunately, that lessened as the story moved forward. The story was still action packed and kept my attention. The characters are thin as always, but I still enjoyed spending some time with them again. Kids will probably more easily overlook both of these things. They might get confused by a few dated references, however, including using an old, now unacceptable, term for a minority. Still, I suspect they will enjoy this page turning story.
