Kristie (106 KP) rated Darius the Great is Not Okay in Books
Sep 18, 2018
YA contemporary
For the most part I really enjoyed Darius the Great is Not Ok by Adib Khorram. This young adult contemporary novel was heart wrenching and at times heart breaking to read. At times I felt like the main character Darius was a little over the top with how sensitive he was but for the most part I was rooting for him to rise up. This was a great story showing the struggles of living with depression while trying to find yourself and dealing with the teenage awkwardness of growing up. I completely felt for Darius and could relate to a lot of his struggles throughout the book, especially with trying to see where he fit in with his culture and being the only one standing awkwardly to the side not understanding the language of his heritage. I really loved all of the characters and learning about this culture and I would definitely recommend.

Cumberland (1142 KP) rated The Summer I Turned Pretty (Summer, #1) in Books

Sweet Summer Love Story
I was a little bit unsure of this book, because of the name. I was afraid it was going to be one of those stereotypical books where the girl gets skinny/ discovers make up/ something happens that suddenly makes her pretty, and all the boys notice her. I was pleasantly suprised that it was a lot more than that. Yes it is stated that Belly was prettier than in the past, but all the boys in the story had reasons to like her that went beyond looks. At 16 Belly is starting to act more like an adult, and that plays a large role in drawing the boys attention.
This book also did a great job showing that the characters had more going on than just a teen romance. I read this in a day, and would highly suggest it to anyone looking for a fun new read.

A generally breathtaking novel that will leave you wanting more of The Cast's story.

I was tremendously astounded with how much I loved this novel. It was a lot different from what I've read before and honestly, I don't think I've read a lot of Adult Fiction. This was a 'breath of fresh air while also maintaining a serious undertone' read. Serious topics were talked about and honestly pulled at each and every heartstring, allowing me to imagine myself going through exactly what The Cast went through. The Cast was a different read because of the characters being of a Jewish community, so it was fun to see how that played out and developed with some of the characters. Honestly, all of the Hebrew really intrigued me. I definitely recommend to those who want a bit different of a read.

Jeremy King (346 KP) rated Batman and Harley Quinn (2017) in Movies

When i watched this i was stuck on a runway for 1.5hours waiting to take off, so that might influence my rating.
I grew up with the batman cartoon and well this is not your tv cartoon batman. A lot of adult themes going on in here. So you might want to take a peak at it before letting the little ones watch it. It is ment for older teens and adults.
What I like about this is how it is empowering for a female character. Harley Quinn might be a loose cannon but this shows she does not need Batman, Nightwing or the Joker. She is her own stand alone kick ass character and she does not need to be a sidekick.
If you like batman you might want to check it out or leave it but if you are a fan of Harley Quinn i say it is a must to see.

What a story
Lyra and Pan's journey, and the characters they meet along the way, ranks as one of my favourite works of fiction. The descriptions, the details and varied points of view, make this an engaging and compelling read. I have to say, it was not easy to put down.
The changes the first film made were not good (as proved by the lack of sequels) though it had some great casting. The new series looked promising, but since I read the books bacķ in 2010, I think I will have to revisit them soon!
This magical coming of age story was so lovely, I gave the hardback trilogy to my 9 year old niece who loved it, and has been loving fantasy since!
I recommend this for the hitting puberty audience, since that is a strong theme throughout, but an adult with a love of the genre would love it too!.

Hilarious
I didn’t really know what to expect with this film, I always watch a direct to Sky film with reservations but for a change this one was pleasantly enjoyable.
The majority of the entertainment in this film comes from the highly inappropriate actions, language and conversation of the adult characters around the young children. Alexander England is a riot as the terrible uncle Dave, and Josh Gad’s Teddy McGiggle was delightfully funny as the crude children’s tv personality, although I think his character could’ve been used a lot better in parts. The physical effects in this are good and nice to see, especially in what is most likely a very low budget film. The ending (apart from a few choice zombie moments) is maybe a little bit OTT and cheesy, but overall this is just a fun, entertaining and different take on the zombie film. Maybe we haven’t seen everything zombie films have to offer just yet!

Good characters both the main and side.. (1 more)
Good themes that make you think about them long after the end.
'Insta-love' but I'll forgive it in this sense. (1 more)
The title isnt wrong :'(
Death-Cast was a clever idea but I'm glad it's not real
Gosh I'm trying to figure out what to say about this book. It's LGBTQIA+ Friendly which is a big plus for me (I want to find that more in literature.) Adam Silvera has a way of writing that I like, I want to check out more he's written. I am not a big fan of 'insta-love' but it was ok in this instance.
I like books that make you think about them and wonder about your own existence. I liked the themes of how interconnected humanity is. I'm glad death-cast isnt real, but it was a clever idea. I didnt expect that much going into it because I dont read a lot of young adult novels, I was pleasantly surprised.

Lee KM Pallatina (951 KP) rated Alphablocks in TV

Early years education
As we are all spending our time at home & children's education is important, these may be worth your time.
As a parent myself I can assure you that although for an adult these can be mind numbing and rather boring, its good to know that there's tv to help home schooling.
Alphablocks is a British animated educational television programme that is designed to teach young children how to spell using animated blocks representing each letter. It is animated by Blue-Zoo and produced by Alphablocks Ltd.
Once the Alphablocks discover that whenever they make a word it comes to life, many new adventures in Alphaland can be created.
This is meant to help preschool children with learning the alphabet, spelling, reading and writing.
With it's bright colours & easy to understand dialogue, Alphablocks is a fun and intriguing show for kids.
