LeftSideCut (3778 KP) rated Starship Troopers (1997) in Movies

Do you know what? Starship Troopers is a 5 star film and there's nothing anyone can say to convince me otherwise.
It's 90s sci-fi at its absolute best.
It has a great cast - Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Michael Ironside, Clancy Brown, Dina Meyer, Neil Patrick-Harris, Jake Busey - none of them feel replaceable.
It has special effects that genuinely still.homd up over 20 years later, and also a fuck tonne of genuinely horrific practical effects - some of the violence in Starship Troopers is next level, in true Paul Verhoeven style.
It has a corny yet airtight script, it's suitably cheesy when it wants to be, and wonderfully satirical throughout.
It's also got a top tier score courtesy of Basil Poledouris.
I saw this film when I was in my early teens, a few years after it released and it has always stuck with me since. Starship Troopers is perfection, fight me.

Leanne Crabtree (480 KP) rated The Vampire's Release (Undead in Brown County, #4) in Books

Since I read this after reading book 3, it made a lot more sense to me than the 18 months between book 2 and 3.
Anyway, I'm glad that Sarah finally made her mind up and chose Michael, he'd always cared for her so for them to end up together has made me happy for them. Team Michael!
As for the rest, everything that had been building up over the previous three books was brought to a head in this and we see the final showdown with the Council and some of the other Vampires. I'm glad a lot of it fell on the good guys side.
If you're going to read this, you should read them as closely together as possible to get the full affect of the story.
I've seen the author is planning on a fifth book, but I think the series has ended well enough without it so I don't think I'll read it if it does come out.

Awix (3310 KP) rated The Avengers - Season 6 in TV
Dec 11, 2020
The Avengers' final season is an infuriatingly inconsistent mixture of a couple of brilliant episodes, quite a few ones which just about pass muster, many which have clearly been cobbled together in a hurry as a contractual obligation, and a handful which are just plain dreadful. Linda Thorson, Diana Rigg's replacement as Patrick Macnee's co-star, tends to get a lot of stick, but it's not her fault the producers were fired, replaced, and then re-hired midway through the production of the season - hence the mish-mash of approaches. The relentless deadlines of the American networks the show was now being made for probably didn't help much.
It still mostly looks excellent, and Patrick Macnee is always good value, but coming after the peerless Emma Peel seasons it can't help but seem like a show which has visibly lost its way. As noted, there are some terrific individual episodes here, but you definitely have to know where to look for them.

Emma (519 KP) rated The Last Fighting Tommy in Books

The subject this month that was picked for my book club was world war one, I was struggling to find a book to read, and so was lent two books. This one by my mother and war horse by my friend. I chose to read this one, and was honestly a bit dubious about reading it. I have always been more interested in ancient history than modern history and didn't think it would agree with me. However I couldn't put this book down, the way it is written makes you feel like you are sat with Harry, listening to him tell his stories, and for me it us unusual to read about someone that didn't want to go to war. Also reading about his life, and the things he did before the war and after it....well what and interesting man and definitely full of character. I hope his story lives on for a long time to come.

3.5 stars.
I've always liked playing games on the various platforms, some I was better at than others, some I enjoyed more than others, so the chance to read a romance between two gamers was quite fun.
The references they bandied about were fun at times and at others I had no ideas what they were talking about so maybe I'm not as big a geek as this gang of friends. But the banter was fun nonetheless.
I liked the romance aspect, how it sort of grew slowly and then because they weren't used to being in a relationship, they didn't know what they were to each other: friends, boyfriend/girlfriend...they figured it out after a while though.
The side story--or maybe it was the main story--of the game, didn't interest me as much but when it got to its ending, I thought the outcome was quite funny. All that work...lol.
