"Growing up I didn't have an older brother, so all my music was formed by my mother and father. The latter would play old Irish folk songs and outlaw music by Johnny Cash and the only thing my mother would play was heavy melancholy orchestral movements like Night On Bald Mountain. What my mother would make me do is sit on the floor and tell my father to tell a story while putting on this record. This was big for me. I was probably four years old at the time. It sounded eerie, spooky and epic. My dad would make up these ghost stories but what he was really doing was recreating these children's story soundtracks that I'd listened to! I was too young to understand what he was doing at the time, but he was just making his personalised version of The Little Prince or Tales of Witches, Ghosts And Goblins. So he'd be like [eerie voice]: ""The ghosts would move up the Catskill Mountains..."" and I'd just sit there freezing in fear of these ghost stories! It was like having a musical campfire in your living room. Also, this song featured on the film Fantasia, which was my whole life up until the age of ten. It stuck with me and it was embedded in there now you're mixing visuals. I wasn't into the Mickey Mouse aspect of it, but when you watch the eerie castle and spooky ghosts, this is just feeding a young boy's imagination and this is the world he's going to confront when he grows up. These were all the ingredients going into my soup."

There are better YA book about suicded i would of prefered be made (1 more)
Triggery for self harmers and those who attempted suicde
There are better adaptions of suicide premise in YA
From the age off 11 i self harmed at 23 that changed into worse depression and suicide attempts. At the time of these events i never really heard of people my age doing that so i think that seeing this series could of helped in some way not feeling alone. I did read the book 10 years ago and as it wasn't visually as graphic as the TV series it made me release other people go through bad stuff and get into suicidal places. My problem with the show isn't the suicide it about the blame she forces onto everyone else. For me when i made the transition from self harming and depression to truly ending it other people didn't come into play, The suicide was merely the only option to my own though no matter what had or happened in the past nobody else should be taken down for it. I know know that it will always affect others in ways you cant know but at the time I never saw it. So for me books about suicide in YA fictional field that handle it better are books like All The Bright Places are better at exploring this premise and i look forward to the film as its been optioned.
As for the Tv version of this show I loved Clay and the boy who played him the acting was superb and I enjoyed the series however for people who still self harm or are suicidal this show is very very triggory.

The strong female characters (0 more)
Even though this book has a nice looking cover I can’t say that it is a book I would have picked up myself
The Goodreads blurb reads

“Born on the night of an ill-auguring comet just before Charles II's Restoration, Ursula Flight has a difficult future written in the stars.

Against the custom of the age she begins an education with her father, who fosters in her a love of reading, writing and astrology.

Following a surprise meeting with an actress, Ursula yearns for the theatre and thus begins her quest to become a playwright despite scoundrels, bounders, bad luck and heartbreak.”

On the face of it it sounds like a ‘coming of age’ historical drama, which it essentially was, and not in an era I really have much an interest in. So it was nice to read something a little out of my comfort zone.

As the blurb says, Ursula is a young girl with aspirations of the stage. Unfortunately for Ursula her parents have a life planned for her and being a lowly actress is not one of them. The story follows Ursula's struggles to follow her parents wishes whilst trying to stay true to herself.

I loved the way this was written, its told from Ursula's point of view and interspersed with little snippets of play writing by Ursula. Ursula is a very strong character that is way ahead of the era she lives in. What I loved most about this book was near the end, i won't spoil it, but suffice to say I think the author was very clever with the ending she chose.

To summarise, it’s a well written well reserached coming of aged historical drama with a strong female lead and an admirable feminist message.
