Ross (3284 KP) rated Live at the Apollo by James Brown / James Brown And His Famous Flames in Music
Jul 6, 2020
Rolling Stone's 25th greatest album of all time
Very strange and unsettling live album where James Brown seems to just try to seduce half of the audience, who scream almost the entire time. His performances are very visual so I think you miss a lot by only listening (there are times when the screaming intensifies and you have no idea why). A decent listen but the songs are not his best and the live aspect is similarly not perfect.

Rolling Stone's 24th greatest album of all time
Brilliant intelligent and thought-provoking soul album. Higher Ground has to be one of the best feelgood soul songs, and Living for the City certainly becomes more topical once again with the discussions ongoing on systemic racism, being about a young black man arriving in New York for the first time, and quickly being arrested and imprisoned for accidentally walking down the wrong street and being approached by the wrong person.

Ross (3284 KP) rated Here, My Dear by Marvin Gaye in Music
May 5, 2020 (Updated Apr 7, 2021)
Rolling Stone's 456th greatest album of all time (493rd in the 2020 list)
A nice but unusual collection of soul songs by Marvin Gaye. Anna's Song is a great typical soul song, but the likes of Funky Space Reincarnation are as odd as the name suggests. I think to get the most out of this album you need to ingest similar things to what Gaye must have done in writing and recording it! No classics but good listening.

Ross (3284 KP) rated At Budokan by Cheap Trick in Music
May 7, 2020
Rolling Stone's 426th greatest album of all time
An incredibly atmospheric live album (Cheap Trick really seem to have been massive in Japan, like Beatlemania level), including "I Want You to Want Me" and a number of other foot-stomping rock and roll songs. One nice little Easter Egg was discovering that the speaking at the end of "I Want You to Want Me" was sampled to introduce "Jimmy James" by the Beastie Boys on Check Your Head.

Ross (3284 KP) rated Anthology by The Temptations Motown in Music
May 11, 2020
Rolling Stone's 400th greatest album of all time
Great best of the Temptations. A number of true soul classics (full disclosure: I don't know who sang what between the Temptations, Four Tops and Drifters) including My Girl, I'm Gonna Make You Love Me and the superb Get Ready. As with the Supremes anthology, however, there is a little too much filler to justify the double album. A great listen with some disco tracks at the end.
