Rolling Stone's 71st greatest album of all time

Paul Simon's "discovery" of South African musical styles and using them to restart his flagging career after splitting up with Garfunkel and reducing sales on his solo albums. Musically more interesting than his other efforts, I would still rather listen to the artists that inspired it. I find Paul Simon to be quite weaselly and I can't get past that. The album was unarguably ground-breaking for its time (except a white man using music of black origin for his own gain, that was nothing new) and I would hope opened doors for world music artists.

"Again, a pretty disgusting cover. That wasn't my intention with this collection - I wasn't trying to pick the worst or most ironic sleeves I could. But I suppose a couple I did end up choosing after realising how disgusting they were. This one is horrible. Again, the record has such a magic about it... I think it's best to listen with your eyes shut. The album is really great folk. I first heard the song called 'Summer' on that Jarvis Cocker compilation The Trip. I heard it and thought there's no way the whole album is going to be as good, and it was."

"Joy Division used to play Trans-Europe Express before we went on stage, to get us into the zone. It worked because it gets up a lot of momentum. Radioactivity was a bit of a downer album for me, but Trans-Europe Express just seemed to express an optimism - even if people see it as machine music. It reminds me of Cabaret , the film, with all of the 1920s singing. For Kraftwerk, it's proper 'songy'. It's the same thing as with LCD Soundsystem and Sparks; when you get that marriage between humans and machines, and you get it right, it's fantastic. I have to say it's my favourite Kraftwerk album."

Rolling Stone's 371st greatest album of all time

Absolute belter of an album. If you can get past the rock and roll cliché that Alex Turner has become (generally more coked-up than the soft drinks aisle of Tesco at Christmas), this is simply a load of well written fast rock songs with punk ethics. There are so many excellent songs here that it is easy to forget, from their smash debut single I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, and Dancing Shoes to the slower paced Mardy Bum and Riot Van. A great band (at the time!) loving their time in the studio.
