Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2069 KP) rated Half Upon a Time (Half Upon a Time, #1) in Books

Another alternative fairytale story with the characters we know and love at war with each other. This time, a reluctant Jack is trying to help a strang girl from our world find and rescue her grandmother. The book moved quickly and the ending left me anxious to get my hands on the sequel. Highly recommended.

The photography throughout this book was art in itself!
The photography throughout this book was art in itself! The recipes were not only well-laid out with full-detail but all were healthy and work with fresh ingredients. Having never cooked with many of the alternative ingredients shared in this book, I can't wait to try some of the 80 or so recipes! Always dealing with digestive issues, I believe I've stumbled onto an incredible resource in this book.

Unexpectedly good
I listened on audio and there was great narration from Julia Whelan.
This was a unique story line told from the supposed evil protagonist point of view with an alternative Batwing POV. Selena was interesting in her evil and heartfelt personas and I enjoyed being drawn into this world. The characters of Batwing, Poison Ivy and Harlequin were all intriguing and enjoyable.
Highly recommend and you don't need prior knowledge of the other books or Catwoman.

Sheer brilliance
I tried reading the first Discworld book (The Colour of Magic) years ago & I couldn't get into it. Skip forward to this year & a conversation with some of my learned Pratchett reading colleagues who advised that starting at Book 1 wasn't advisable & instead offered a few alternative starting points - Going Postal being the favourite.
All I can say is that I will be forever thankful for this book. Not only was it a fantastic way of getting into the Discworld series, but it is now among my favourite ever books of all time.
It's beautifully written - full of humour and wit. It's also a great alternative take on industrialisation and the introduction of the postal service. Moist Von Lipwig is a brilliant character, flawed but still loveable, and the supporting characters too all have their charms. Mr Pump especially raised quite a few laughs.
This is Pratchett at his best and if youre ever thinking about tackling the mammoth Discworld series, this is the place to start.

I like it, but I'm ready for something better.
Let's face it, Goodreads is the best known book cataloging social site there is. However, like all sites, once they get too big or acquired by a major company, they start to go downhill. That's what's happened with Goodreads. Now it's almost impossible for me to keep up with the people I actually want to keep up with, the ads are annoying, and it keeps eating my reviews.
Definitely need an alternative.

Easy to use (1 more)
Good Tutorials
Great IPhone and IPad photo editor
I downloaded this app as a photoshop alternative. I mainly needed it to create images for social media clients and also manipulating stock images to create book covers.
The app has plenty of features - you can erase backgrounds, merge images, add various effects. The tutorials are very good and easy to follow. With no graphic design experience I was able to create very good social media graphics and book cover images.

An intricate new magical world (2 more)
Realistic characters
Fantastic heroine
The start of an amazing series
In a world where magic and power go hand in hand, what happens when the balance is shifted? The detail of the world, it's magic and the rules that govern the citizens is fantastic and totally engrossing. So glad that there are now several series all tying in to this one so that you can keep on reading and losing yourself in an alternative world.
LeftSideCut (3778 KP) rated Superman: Man of Tomorrow (2020) in Movies

After the first 15 minutes, I was convinced this was going to be 90 minutes of Clark Kent being a little bitch and being called 'kid' by everyone. Turns out it's actually 90 minutes of Superman, Lobo, Martian Manhunter, and a Godzilla sized Parasite smacking the shit out of each other, and it's pretty great.
Really nice animation, a decent voice cast, and an interesting alternative take on the early days of Superman's career. Not much to grumble about with this one.

It's difficult to explain this book without being inappropriate towards a younger audience but I'll do my best.
EL James takes a lot of women's fantasies, that they are too afraid to ever ask their partner to try, and normalises them. A lot of people have described this book as "mummy porn" and okay yes maybe to a degree it is. However it is also so much more, it inadvertently investigates how far we are willing to push ourselves and change for someone we believe we are attracted to or even love. I don't know if she meant to but she certainly challenged mindsets with this book and challenges what we consider normal and acceptable behaviour.
It also brought the BDSM culture into the light and helped make it a lot less taboo. Until this book was released BDSM was seen as sex dungeons, dirty old men and scared, low self-esteem girls. This book helped challenge and change this perception and open people's minds to alternative forms of.... enjoyment.
It is certainly worth a read, if nothing else just to give you an alternative perspective of what society should and shouldn't see as acceptable in relationships.
