Can't see bios until after you swipe.
Great concept, horrible execution
You can't actually see people's bios until after you are already matched with them. In order to access premium, three of your friends have to sign up using your link. It's not possible to just pay for premium. I appreciate the lack of paywalls but that alternative is just tedious. And it kept showing me 18- and 30-year-olds even though I set my age preference to 19-25 (I'm 21). It's ultimately a bad execution of good ideas.
Sarah (7798 KP) rated Trolls (2016) in Movies

Cheesy & Very childish
The majority of animated films nowadays seem to be aimed directly at children, making them far too stupid and childish and I'm afraid Trolls is no different. Animations can work for both adults and kids (as Pixar, Disney and the Lego movies prove), but Trolls just goes for bright colours, a silly plot and lots of pointless singing and dancing. The only thing that can possibly appeal to adults in this film is the songs, but they just seem to be out of place and are an obvious alternative to providing a substantial plot. Even the nostalgia factor from the toys is lost in this.
Erika (17788 KP) rated Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) in Movies
May 12, 2018
When I heard that the same guy that directed Wanted was going to direct the movie version of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, I was game. I was looking so forward to this film.
The first thing I found kind of off about the film was the casting of Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Walker. He was just a little wooden, and it didn't work for me.
Now, Dominic Cooper as Henry Sturges was a great casting. Yes, I read the book, so I knew what Sturges was. The scene with Cooper wearing the pair of sunglasses? Amazing.
Overall, this alternative history was good, but not as well executed as the book.

Bong Mines Entertainment (15 KP) rated Witness - Single by Ghost Lab in Music
Jun 6, 2019
Ghost Lab is an electronic trio/band from Phoenix, Arizona with roots in Nashville and Los Angeles. Not too long ago, they released an ‘80s-inspired electro-pop tune, entitled, “Witness”.
‘Witness’ tells an interesting tale of a young guy who experiences a very special moment in time with someone who he desires to be with.
The likable tune contains a relatable storyline, pleasing vocals, and ‘80s-inspired instrumentation scented with an indie-alternative aroma.
Ghost Lab consists of Austin Ryan, Nick DuPlessis, and Nick Tillery. The bubbly trio has backgrounds in sound engineering, production, songwriting, and live performance.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2086 KP) rated Commander Toad and the Big Black Hole (Commander Toad) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
The crew of the Star Warts is exploring a new part of space when they see a black hole off in the distance. While it makes them reminisce of the holes they grew up in, they suddenly find their ship stuck on something. What is it? Can they break free?
This alternative take on black holes is a lot of fun, although I do feel the book started a bit slowly. Still, the pictures are great, the puns are present, and the ending provides a great moral that everyone can learn from – don’t sing with your mouth full!

James Koppert (2698 KP) rated 7 Little Words. A Fun Twist On Crossword Puzzles in Apps
Nov 13, 2019
Fun game for word fans
Made by an indy developer, 7 Words is a fun and easy to use game as an alternative take on the crossword puzzle.
Each level you are given a number of clues and a bunch of tiles. The tiles are the answers broken down in three letter parts. For example the clue may be 'the middle of the week' so you would click on tiles saying WED NES. DAY. It sounds simple but is trickier than you think
It's also intuitively designed and clean and easy to use. If you like word games a really recommend this and live supporting indie developers.

ClareR (5589 KP) rated Not Buying It in Books
Dec 19, 2019
Fake news in a post truth era.
Not Buying It describes the ‘post-truth’ era really well, how social media and the media manipulates our opinions, and how politics is becoming a central area where we are seeing the results of this (as well as science). It covers both sides of the Atlantic and Charlotte Henry looks at how ‘fake news’ became a thing, how we were (and are) fed alternative facts, and finally what we can do to better inform ourselves.
It’s NOT a cheery read, but it’s an essential one! Highly recommended, and I enjoyed it very much.
Many thanks to The Pigeonhole, Unbound and Charlotte Henry for reading along.
