The Wrong Girl (Jane Ryland, #2)

This is the second book about reporter Jane Ryland and Boston detective Jake Brogan. This time around, Jane is helping a former co-worker find out if she was sent to the wrong woman while trying to track down her birth mother. Meanwhile, she is also covering a murder that Jake is investigating. A woman is found murdered. Two kids under 3, both alive, are in the next room. It looks like a simple domestic dispute except the woman has no ID anywhere in the apartment.

I loved the book. It started fast and never let me go until I reached the end. The characters were great as well, and I had a blast spending time with all of them.

I got the book via Amazon Vine.

The Iron Hunt (Hunter Kiss, #1)

The Iron Hunt is a beautifully written book with some interesting twists on established fantasy memes. To some extent, I felt that I'd come in to the world on book 2 or 3, but as far as I know (and from what Amazon says) this is the first book of the Hunter Kiss series. There was a bit of Buffy and a little Witchblade, with other elements I'm sure I'm overlooking.

For once, it's good to see a novel in which an established couple has a seemingly-healthy relationship. Maxine and Grant have very different skills, but they work together well. That said, this is not a romance.

Edited to add: I just learned that there is, in fact, a prequel to this book in The Wild Thing anthology, which I hadn't heard of before. I'll certainly be looking for it.

This was actually one of those novels that came up under the 'frequently bought with...' sections in Amazon, although at the time I did not purchase it there. Rather, I picked it up a short while later in my local Bargain Books, for something like £2. I was hoping to enjoy it, as I (generally) do like this type of fiction and as some of the critics quotations on the back of the book were good, but I have to say: I think that they (and, in particular, Kate Saunders from The Times who calls it 'exciting, gripping and imaginative') must have been reading a different novel from me - I found this, truth be told, to actually be a bit of a chore to read.

Doubt I'll be picking up the sequels (this is, apparently, the first in a planned trilogy), even for £2!

Your Name probably spent about a year sitting on my Amazon Prime watchlist before I eventually decided to watch it. A movie with 370 reviews and an overall rating of 5 stars, constantly overlooked by me in favour of old episodes of The Office! And then, one cold and gloomy weekend afternoon, I decided to give it a go.

To be honest, it didn’t really do anything for me at first, it felt a bit messy and a little confusing and I very nearly gave up on it after about 20 minutes. And then it grabbed me - the beautiful animation, the incredible storytelling, the emotion and the drama all clicked and took hold and by the end of it all this movie had completely blown me away. I’m only sorry I didn’t give this a chance sooner and I cannot recommenced it enough. Incredible.
