Midnight Sun (2018)
2018 | Drama, Romance
Brutally effective cry-porn, succeeds at that and nothing else but it doesn't really need to - and considering how clunky the rest of it feels it's probably for the best that it didn't try to be anything more. Enough has been said about the very justified anger this caused in romanticizing this incredibly serious disorder but imo it isn't all too much different from how π˜›π˜©π˜¦ 𝘍𝘒𝘢𝘭𝘡 π˜ͺ𝘯 π˜–π˜Άπ˜³ 𝘚𝘡𝘒𝘳𝘴 also cheesily used cancer. Thorne and Riggle are terrific, Patrick Schwarzenegger gives one of the worst performance of 2018 and it's straight-up riotous to watch this guy try and emote. Has the 2014 artsy Tumblr hipster white-Christmas-lights aesthetic and everything. Mostly all I could have hoped for out of it as this stupid, overly-quirky genre of John Green clones continues to ironically swoon me.

"I played British and Irish folk in an early band I had. We only performed one show and Rostam [Batmanglij, Vampire Weekend multi-instrumentalist] was also in the group, so this was the roots of Vampire Weekend. We covered 'Matty Groves' from this album. It's a traditional song about adultery, anger and sex, and I thought it was cool that they could take ancient-sounding stories and make them relevant. It's an important lesson – if you want to reinvent the wheel, maybe pop music isn't for you. As much as it's about being progressive, it's also rooted in a certain respect for the form. Which might seem paradoxical, but that's what pop music is – it combines very old ideas with very new sounds. Fairport are an example of that, taking very old songs in the English language and reinventing them."

Beauty is a strange thing; here one day, gone the next. There is something about this song that feels permanent. Yeah maybe a mix this good shouldn't have such quality lyrics; maybe there shouldn't be violins without a quartet; maybe the lead vocal should be trying harder to sound like something we know already.

Bold Forbes finds a middle ground between Bob Dylan and Violent Femmes. The production is gorgeous. I needed this message. You might need it too.

β€œAnd while some swear that river did not used to run
There are others who scoff as they stand in the sun
Getting angry β€˜cause anger is fun”

it's not just about those who do wrong, and those who do right; there are also those who do nothing.

The answer? More love, more life. Right now.

**Many thanks to Netgalley and Gallery Pocket Books for the chance to read this collection for an honest review**

ALMOST HOME is an intimate examination of the structures within Kuhn's life, whether brand new or battered -- lost or found -- and it resonates with our own search for a place to call our own. I particularly loved "When I Wake", "My Old Self", "Prism", "When I'm Alone/ In A Coffee Shop/ I Find Myself," and "I Am Grateful You Are Not Me". I loved how intimate these poems were -- and how bluntly honest they were without bitterness or anger.

I guess the largest reason I enjoyed this collection is because so much of it mirror my own experiences, and it felt as though the poet was speaking of our shared pain, confusion, and moments of triumph or joy along our journey.
