In the (possibly not so distant) future, there's a Covenant between the human world and the natural one: Humans wreaked havoc on the Earth, and now they must make amends. They do this through obtaining Hearts, animal spirits that they must earn through a series of trials, proving they are of strong heart and mind and are willing to protect the lands and all its inhabitants. Adain is ready to begin his journey into adulthood, and it starts with the Heart Chase, where he must capture a Heart to call his own. Little does he know that this year's trials won't go according to plan...
This story pulled me in from the very start. Just the idea behind it alone, that humans have made a pact with the natural world to bring order back from the chaos of our time, is a fantastic concept, one that I had long discussions about with friends upon starting this series. And the way it's written makes it easily understandable for anyone, as children could read it right alongside their parents. I've already recommended this book to several people, and I look forward to the rest of the series, as well as more from this author.
5 stars =)

Fans of Mo Willems won't be surprised at the first two thirds of this book. It may introduce us to a new set of characters, but the storytelling, humor, and fun are classic Mo, including the easy to read dialogue driven action. I was trying hard not to laugh in public as I finished it up. The rest of the book consists of some fun jokes and a couple of sections that tell us about teeth and quiz us on some animal teeth. It's actually quite interesting, and presented in a fun way, so kids will enjoy learning about it as well. They might even get interested in learning more on their own, which is a good thing. I didn't love it as much as I've loved some of his other picture books. I think my issue is, this isn't an Elephant and Piggie book. I certainly can't find another reason not to like this book, and I think kids will have so much fun they won't care.

Rich Hardy is an animal activist, and he considers that it is his responsibility to inform the public of the living conditions that the animals who live and die for our food and clothing endure. And it’s not easy reading. It can’t have been easy researching either. It’s clear that Rich’s life and/ or safety is in danger on several occasions, and that by the way he deals with these incidents it just shows that these aren’t the first time he’s had to deal with them. This man has made it his life’s work to stand up for animals and the way they live and die (although as he is a vegan, I’m pretty sure he’d rather they didn’t have to die for our benefit at all), and has written this book in an informative, non-preachy way.
This has certainly made me think more about the food I put on my family’s plate, and we have reduced the amount of meat in our diet as a consequence. Who knows, perhaps we’ll ditch it completely!
Many thanks to The Pigeonhole for serialising the book, and Rich Hardy for reading along.
