Nineteen-year-old Jakob Novis and his fourteen-year-old sister, Lizzie, share a love of riddles and puzzles. As WWII gets closer and closer to Britain, the siblings find themselves amongst the greatest secrets of all - Britain’s codebreaking facility at Bletchley Park. As Jakob joins the country’s top minds to crack Nazi’s Enigma cipher, Lizzie transfers notes between departments in the park and tries to solve the mysterious disappearance of their mother in her off time.
While the Novis siblings work hard on their tasks, messages and codes begin to arrive under their doorstep. It doesn’t help that while they try to figure out if the messages are truly for them (and possibly from their mother), that there is an inspector lurking outside the gates of the park, watching Jakob and Lizzie’s every move. They must figure out a way to put their bickering aside and work together to decipher the clues if they want to uncover the answers to the puzzle.
As usual, I will pick up anything Ruta Sepetys touches and learn about a part of history I hadn’t known about before I read the book. This book is no exception as we take a deeper dive into the codebreakers Bletchley Park during WWII. I knew there were codebreakers during WWII, but what I didn’t realize is that they consisted of mathematicians, chess champions, and librarians (which, as a librarian, this absolutely makes sense why they were needed!).
Though this book is aimed at middle grade, I will say it felt like it would be more for upper middle grade / younger high school age. Lizzie is fourteen and Jakob is nineteen so their voices were a little older, but nothing major or graphic happened that would make the novel need to be young adult.
Even as an adult, when it came to the description of the codes’ breakthroughs or the ins and outs of the Enigma machines, I would get lost, but overall I just assumed the characters knew what they were talking about and trusted them.
Overall, I loved the twists and turns that kept the pages moving for me. I know I had a hard time as an adult solving the clues, so young readers who like spies and code cracking, are sure to love this too.

The world building is excellent and you can digest each little new bit of information as it comes.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this!
When Melody first met Aodh, they were but children, but they promised themselves to each other. When Melody's father found out, he was not happy, and bound Aodh memories of Melody, and took her away. Now, on the verge of being made the mistress of another king, she does something drastic to win the Goblin King's heart. The road to true love is never easy, as Melody soon finds out. Can she make Aodh see her, really SEE that she is his, in every way?
I really only have one niggle about this book! Only Melody gets a say and I really REALLY wanted to hear from Aodh as well. I think, for me, had he been given a say, this would be a 5 star read from me.
That said, what Melody does say is that she gets across all of that heartbreak she faced when her father took her away. All of the emotion she feels, when she makes the dangerous decision to outsmart the Goblin King. And the pain she feels, when Aodh pushes her away.
There is a large supporting cast, with a betrayal thrown in, coming from a very unexpected source! But given the choice this person had to make, you can see why they did it. Melody's brother did something a bit questionable, but he got the answers he needed for Melody.
It's not especially explicit, but there is much emotion here. It's more about Melody winning Aodh over, rather than getting into his bed. Although, she wants that too :0 Some ideas are a little darker, but perfectly normal for this world. Melody is promised to another king as his mistress, and her parents are very happy about that.
No real violence, either.
The world building is excellent. Not everything is thrown at you all at once, and you can digest each little new bit of information as it comes. You can immerse yourself into this world, so beautifully.
First I've read of this author, I'd like to read more.

I cant see where these books are going!

OK, so! Here's the thing: these books are a fair step out of my comfort zone, and I'm bloody LOVING them! But I also hate them. WHY?? I cannot, for the life of me, see where they are going and it's doing my head in! But I am so fully invested in these people and their lives, that I cannot give up. And if I do not get my answers in book 4, I will be mighty peeved!
This is book 3 and you need to read these books in order. It's very important!
In book one, we only got Doran, book 2 gave us Nathaniel as well. Now, in book 3, we get Grace too.
And that girl has a world of pressure on her young shoulders, she really does. The forces that want her gone are circling, pressing in on all sides. They are, systematically, removing her support, piece by piece. And Grace fights, she fights hard and I loved that she starts to find her feet.
Doran and Nathaniel continue to grow their relationship, but the book is mostly clean. The smex scenes are very much faded to grey and I loved that here.
This is, though, a bit darker, I thought. Violent, too. But those wanting her gone play dirty, and deadly, and it all comes to a shocking cliffhanger that I did not see coming and I was annoyed and angry and all sorts of negative feelings that really erupted from me and my kindle hit the wall! (both wall and kindle are unscathed!)
So now Grace and Nathaniel, the man she hates the most, and with good reason, are on the run. Those closest to Grace have been left for dead and she has to trust Nathaniel, she really does.
I said in my review for book 2 that I'm not sure what Samael has to do with anything. I STILL don't know the answer to that!
Because these books keep me fully invested and entertained. Because I cannot see where it's going. Because I am both loving and hating these books in equal measure.
Just bloody because it's my review and I can star it how I see fit . . .
