ClareR (5784 KP) rated Dangerous Women in Books

The dialogue between the women seemed authentic to me. These convicts came from all parts of the British Isles: London, the West Country, Scotland, Ireland. What connected them though, was their crimes all appeared to be the result of their sex and poverty. They were all working class women who had acted out of desperation, and it was really interesting to hear their stories.
I know this is a work of fiction, but the Rajah did exist, as does the quilt that the women were working on. The quilt is now on display in the National Gallery of Australia. I googled it - it’s beautiful. How anyone could have produced it whilst on a ship in the ocean, I have no idea 🤢
The conditions on board must have been appalling. At the start, the Matron instructs the women to scrub their quarters, but they would have been cramped, their toilet was below decks (buckets), and seasickness along with poor food would have made quite some heady aroma! They may have been convicts, but I was impressed by their stoicism in these circumstances.
I felt that I learnt an awful lot whilst reading this, as well as being thoroughly entertained - it’s a fabulous book!

Penny’s life is a mess - she will be the first to admit it. Her marriage is over, she has walked out on her job and her house, and now has nowhere to live. However, she finds herself rushing to her grandmother’s rescue when it looks as though Adult Protective Services are going to get involved in her life unless her house is cleaned. Along the way, she meets her grandmother’s accountant whose living conditions also leave a lot to be desired, her biological father makes an appearance, her grandfather needs her help because of his frankly awful second wife, and we get to see Penny’s sister in Australia as Penny and her grandfather make a last ditch attempt to find her mother and stepfather. They had gone missing in the outback five years before, and Penny is finding it difficult to accept that they’re really dead.
This is a really funny book, but boy is it dark. Whilst I was laughing at the predicaments that Penny found herself in, I realised that she seemed to be helping everyone else, and none of these people seemed to be helping or caring for her. She is a quiet voice amidst the shouting and misadventures of her family (her grandmother is really VERY entertaining!), and she just needs someone to take her side and give her a hug (if she’ll let them!).
It’s an uplifting story all in all, and well worth reading.

Bong Mines Entertainment (15 KP) rated Pleasures by DIRTY RADIO in Music

“Our primary goal was to collaborate with all our favorite musicians and producers and then see what would happen. In writing and producing our past albums, we remained pretty introverted during the writing and recording process, only inviting a few key people to assist. For this record, we wanted to push ourselves creatively to write the best songs we could while remaining open to other ideas. Geographically speaking, we recruited collaborators on this record from Berlin, Brighton, L.A., Australia, Las Vegas, and here in Vancouver.” – DIRTY RADIO
‘Pleasures’ contains a diverse, interwoven array of singles which display DIRTY RADIO’s musical evolution through the lens of their irresistible R&B-infused electronic beats.
The likable project offers a delightfully diverse assortment of music ranging from future-house, garage, soul, and electro-infused R&B.
Also, the 16-track album contains relatable storylines, ear-welcoming vocals, and groovy instrumentations flavored with an electro-dance aroma.
“This album is much more focused than our previous records. We really wanted to hone in on creating music we would be excited to perform live while also exploring and improving on our style (House/R&B). Although we have focused on releasing singles for the past few years. We wanted this album to be something you could listen to from beginning to end.” – DIRTY RADIO
Since 2010, DIRTY RADIO has been crafting a satisfying synthesis of progressive soul, R&B, and electronic music.
With their diverse musical influences, the multi-instrumentalists and producers have been working tirelessly in their studio.
Also, they’ve been racking up impressive Soundcloud and Spotify numbers. Plus, releasing tracks for iconic labels such as Spinnin’, Partyfine, Majestic Casual, and Mad Decent.

BookwormMama14 (18 KP) rated Then There Was You in Books
Jan 2, 2019
There is a love triangle-squareish thing going on. But tastefully done and did not make me uncomfortable or annoyed. It felt very real and a situation that is very believable. Being set in Australia and jumping back and forth from an American perspective and an Australian's it really helped the perspective of how differently cultures can be even if they speak the same language. I LOVED it! I adore learning about different cultures...Even if I was disappointed to learn a thing or two about Koalas that weren't all that great. And drop bears! Y'all better watch out for those if you ever visit the land down under!
This story depicts the amazing hand of God at work in our lives. Sometimes, the things He has for us are even greater than we ever thought possible. Even if we can't see how it could ever work out.
Both Paige and Josh let preconceived ideas influence their opinions of each other. Only through trust and removing the walls they have placed around themselves will they be able to see the truth. But when that trust is tested will everything they have built be for naught?
A touching and moving romance infused with the healing that only God can provide. Travel Down Under with Paige McAllister for the adventure of a lifetime.
I received a complimentary copy of Then There Was You from the author. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

JT (287 KP) rated Charlie and Boots (2012) in Movies
Mar 10, 2020
Content to shut himself off from the world he is rescued by his son Boots (Jacobson) who decides to take him on a very impromptu trip to fish off of Australia’s Northern most point, Cape York.
It’s a road trip, a buddy film about dealing with death and the start of new beginnings. Along the way the pair pick up Jess (Morgan Griffin), a young female hitchhiker with boyfriend trouble, and whose happy go lucky outlook on life seem to rub off on the duo.
It’s clear to see from the outset that these two have not had the closest of father son relationships, with a particular family tragedy revealed mid way through, and both have put up strong boundaries. But the trip is a chance to put all that behind them and start a fresh.
Of course amongst all the emotional turmoil there are some funny moments, with Charlie trying to avoid the affections of a female trucker, an altercation with a car load of lawn bowls enthusiasts and a bull!
The film could be seen as a promotional tourist video and some of the landscape and scenery is breathtaking, but this film is about Hogan and Jacobson beginning to feel comfortable in each others company once again.
Hogan is very much an Aussie icon, he’s way short of the Crocodile larrikin he once was but here he still manages to ooze the charm and charisma that everyone will still remember.
