I thought this book was really cleverly written. It is a challenging read - challenging because it looks things in the eye which most of us shy away from. It breaks down preconceived ideas, prejudice and assumptions.

It is grim at times, sad, heartbreaking but ultimately uplifting. I thought the characterisation was amazing. The narrative style skillfully portrays a clever woman trapped inside the body of somebody who has limited ability to communicate.

The love story was movingly beautiful but gritty and not over sentimental.

"I discovered this book of poetry in 1978 and carried it in my purse (pages dogeared) for over ten years. It hasn’t been easy to find the 40 copies I’ve gifted to just about every young woman I’ve met. It includes pieces and poems of race, love, loneliness and violence against women, and the very being of women, written from Ntozakes’ very heart-filled and heartbreaking clear view of her body, her life and the world. The entries “No Gust of Wind” and “Every 3 Minutes” = Bible."

This was my first book by the author and I was drawn into it from pretty early on. Anton was intriguing and when the body was found I had my suspicions about who was behind it. Turns out I was way off course with that one and would never have guessed.

Because of how short it was I didn't think we really got to know the characters that well but I did enjoy it.

I will be looking for more books from the author.
