Logan Eccles (135 KP) rated The Predator (2018) in Movies

Really wanted to love this
Ok, so this is not a bad review, it's a sad review. I was looking forward to this new installment ever since the first trailer. The cast was intriguing. Anything with Sterling in it is gonna grab my interest. However, I tried watching this movie on five different occasions and just couldn't be dragged into it fully. I finally forced myself to sit down and watch it in its entirety and its nothing to do with the cast they're fine it's just really not that interesting of a story. I can't pinpoint exactly what I think is wrong with it and maybe that's the problem. Maybe this story just doesn't serve a purpose and that's the sour taste it left in me.
Stories that are just marketing ploys never do well and I think this movie is a testament to that fact. This movie has the feeling it was only made so there could be another Predator movie not because it was a story that needed to be told and I'm utterly disappointed that that was the outcome.

The writing (2 more)
The non-stop barrage of missed opportunities
It ultimately compares unfavorably to movies like RIPD, which it actually resembles more than Ghostbusters
A waste of itself
Why couldn't they have just made the film a sequel About the granddaughters or something of the original cast? It needlessly tries to reboot the whole idea, and does so in the most tedious ways possible. Just to be clear, I wanted to love the movie, and was excited about the all female cast. But everyone really needs to realize at last that Paul Fieg isn't that great of a writer or a director. He was a bag choice, in movie full of bad choices.

The movie was really good i loved it cinematic ally and visually it was excellent it was a film I was so excited for and the whole cast is incredible. (1 more)
Johnny Depp is the best person to play Grindelwald and Jude law as a young dumbledore is just out of this world. All actors in the movie are magical and out of this world.
The good and the bad
The film is incredible and the 3rd film is highly anticipated but they better bring back Johnny Depp and Jude law

Anyone who knows me knows how much I don't like Tom Cruise. I don't know what it is, I'm sure he's a great person, I just don't like his acting for some reason. I can't say much has changed when watching this film or its following parts, but this movie wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It's not the best movie I've ever seen, far from it, but it's definitely not the worst. I don't think I'll ever watch it again and I can't say I'm happy I did.
I guess I'm just sort of indifferent. I'm watching this franchise because a close friend told me to so I'm blaming my lack of interest on him.

Gareth von Kallenbach (980 KP) rated Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019) in Movies

Detective Pikachu is the long awaited live action movie of the beloved video game and animated tv show franchise. The video game has sold over 1.31 billion units, so this movie has a very established fan base that is excited for new content, but also critical when new product doesn’t meet their expectations.
Video game movies in general are typically VERY bad. So bad that any time I hear they are making a movie out of a video game I immediately cringe out of reflex. I’ve been permanently scarred by the likes of Tekken, Super Mario Bros and Mortal Kombat. When Tomb Raider is your benchmark for the best of the best you have reason to be afraid when they say that Detective Pikachu is coming to theaters.
But fear not! This movie is not perfect but it does entertain!
Detective Pikachu is played by the voice of Ryan Reynolds, which in case you didn’t know Pokemon typically do not talk, so this is unusual right off the bat. Pokemon basically just repeat their name over and over again with different voice inflections in order to convey mood or urgency. It’s not as annoying as it sounds; it’s typically adorable actually. Reynolds does an excellent PG impersonation of Deadpool as Pikachu in a comedic role as detective Pikachu and it works surprisingly well. His comic timing is so perfect and the jokes don’t come off as childish or boorish, it really flows and works perfectly in the movie.
Justice Smith plays the lead character role of Tim Goodman who is trying to solve the murder of his estranged father. Justice Smith is very likable and you root for him to beat the bad guy and get the girl (played by Kathryn Newton), which is all you really need in a summer action movie; you need to want the hero or heroine to win. Justice Smith does a great job and I could see them building a franchise around his character going forward.
The visuals are fantastic! Its great seeing the characters from the video game walking around full size like that on the big screen and they did not just do a few, the movie is crawling with them and I loved that.
The story is fairly standard and does follow a formula but it moves along at a good pace and at 1 hour and 44 minutes long it feels like it’s not too long or too short. There are jokes that only the adults will get, there are game characters that only hardcore fans will recognize, but this movie was made for as wide an audience as a video game movie could be. They were trying to make it accessible to all, and I think they accomplished that.
It’s a big budget buddy cop popcorn movie with a lot of action, some laughs, a very light and fluffy kid friendly side love story and great special effects. There was a plot hole or two but it was forgivable and too entertaining to ruin it. I highly recommend turning off your brain, grabbing some popcorn and just enjoying this movie. Not perfect, but very good and fun!

Not Bad
The trailer lead me to believe that this movie was going to suck, but it was actually pretty good. The main protagonist is a boy named Lewis. He movies in with his uncle, whom he has never met before, after the death of his parents. He soon realizes that strange things are happening in his new home, and once his uncle explains that he is a warlock Lewis takes an interest in learning magic.
This film had a lot of moments that made me laugh mixed in with a few serious themes. Lewis really struggles throughout the film. He has a hard time fitting in with his peers, and he is still grieving from the loss of his parents. Sometimes the serious moments felt a little forced, but over all they weren't to bad.
I think older kids would really enjoy this movie. I would be hesitant to take a really young child to this one. They might be frightened by some parts, but really that will depend on the kid.

Charles Burbridge (13 KP) rated The Hurricane Heist (2018) in Movies

Imagine, if you will, a film released in theaters, with Syfy Channel level special effects, acting, and writing. Imagine, if you will, a hurricane that has skulls not so well hidden in the storm clouds in nearly every shot. Imagine, if you will, the hackneyed plot of people trying to steal old money from the Treasury before it gets shredded. You will have imagined Hurricane Heist.
Now, this film is bad, but it's not garden variety bad. It's bad enough that it wrapped itself all the way back around to entertaining. Hurricane Heist is blatantly dumb yet the actors, as much as they can, play it straight. For an hour and a half, you will ask yourself, "Can this movie get any dumber?" The answer is, "Yes. Yes, it can."
Was I entertained? Greatly. Is there any way that I can recommend spending any money on seeing a movie that has nothing going for it besides your incredulity at the fact that it not only got made, but got a theatrical release? No. But, for dang sure, if it shows up on Netflix or on something that you already pay for, check it out, if only for a few minutes. You won't gain anything from those few minutes, but there's a fairly high chance that you will laugh.

Lots of action. (2 more)
Nice casino theme.
Great transition to a new type of James Bond.
Vesper. (1 more)
Bad antagonist background.
Awesome Story, Awesome Lead Actor, Not So Awesome Female Companion.
Contains spoilers, click to show
I really looked forward to seeing this movie, and I really was satisfied. This movie had a great antagonist a great protagonist and a wonderful story to wrap it up in. My only problem was that Vesper was weak, and didn't add much to the story like some of Bond's other companions. Also the main enemy had no explanation to what HE really wanted to do. Like was he trying to make money? Or was he just being a jerk? The last thing is that this usually the transition with a new actor is rocky but Craig did amazing and that's one of the things I liked about the movie. I would definitely recommend it to other who like action movies.

When bad movies happen to good actors.
I like Mila Kunis and adore Kate McKinnon on SNL but this movie is a huge clunker. There is nothing to save the poor plot and script. It's supposed to be a comedy/action film but fails at both. It's kind of all over the place and difficult to follow not because of complexity but because of the randomness of situations and scenes. The few funny moments were probably ad-libbed. The trailer was the best part of the movie, everything else was just awful. When the actors were on the press junket for the film, I recall them saying how funny the movie is. I think they don't always realize that movies that may have been fun for them to film are tedious for viewers to watch. Fun does not equal good or funny.
