HeatherLouise (105 KP) rated V-Wars in TV
Dec 30, 2019
Finally, a return to the way vampires should be- monsters that go bump in the night rather than brooding romantic interests. If you like your vampires scary rather than sexy, this show is for you.
I adored the book series this show is based on, and it took me a couple of episodes to accept the changes that had been made. I hope this gets a second series and they delve deeper into the issues raised in the novels.

Eleanor (1463 KP) rated The Handmaid's Tale in Books
Feb 12, 2020
It’s rare that I prefer a film or TV series to the book it is based on but I think this may be the exception. Having only seen the 1st series on TV I thought I’d give the book a go and although the world-building lives up to what I’d expect the story itself is slow and not as tense.
It’s scary and an all believable world that Atwood creates but the telling seemed bogged down in details over the mundane.
I probably spoiled myself seeing the TV series first but I’d recommend that to all. I feel the theme has been gone over plenty so won't rehash but it's a worthwhile story however you decide to consume it.

David McK (3251 KP) rated Good Omens - Season 2 in TV
Oct 22, 2023 (Updated Oct 22, 2023)
I was one of those who wandered how they would do a second season of a show based on a single book, when the entirety of that book had been covered in season one.
The answer, it turns out, is that Gaiman and Pratchett had ideas for a sequel, which nothing ever came off.
Gaiman is one of the showrunners here (as he was in season 1).
This, even more than that earlier season, concentrates on the pairing of the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, with lots of flashes of the two of them throughout the years since the Creation, and here trying to uncover just why the Archangel Gabriel has arrived at Aziraphale's bookshop with absolutely no memory at all.

Dawn Marie (22 KP) rated Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) in Movies
Jan 19, 2018
Disney in the 80's noticed the trend that horror movies were making quite a bit of money and they were a struggling company financially so they decided they were going to make some scary and sci do movies including watcher in the woods, The Black Hole and This movie Which is based On A ray Bradbury Book. I Must say first that I Have not read the book so my review Is based upon the movie alone! This is scary and definitely not recommended for young viewers that being said it is not a horror movie but is extremely dark with some frightening moments. Mr. Dark and his carnival come to town when things start to happen to the townspeople can two young boys stop mr. Dark from his sinister plans or will they be the next

Haley Mathiot (9 KP) rated One-Skein Wonders® for Babies: 101 Knitting Projects for Infants Toddlers in Books
Apr 27, 2018
I love babies. I love the One-skein wonders series. So it’s natural that I would love this book.
I love knitting and crocheting but I’m not the most patient long-term project minded person. I also really like pictures. Generally I decide what to make (knit, sew, cook) based on the picture. That’s one thing I really like about this book: all the patterns have at least one picture (usually more) plus diagrams! I also really like the page-layout and the color-blocks.
This is perfect for anyone who wants a quick project for a precious little one.

Kyera (8 KP) rated Rise of the Isle of the Lost (Descendants #3) in Books
Feb 1, 2018
Rise of the Isle of the Lost is the third book in the Descendants series, a collection of books about the kids of the most infamous Disney villains. It is based on the Disney Channel Original Movie by the same name and Rise occurs just before the events of the second movie. It follows the villain kids Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos in Auradon, as well as Uma and her pirate crew on the Isle of the Lost.
The book is a middle school reading level, so it is very simply written. I wasn't particularly impressed with the story or the writing, although the book was enjoyable enough. I chose to read it because I am a fan of Disney and found the premise to be intriguing. The execution was underwhelming, but I feel that younger readers would really enjoy this book. It is perfect for those in grades five to seven. I would recommend it to those that are fans of the movie and suggest that you read it before seeing the second movie, as that is where it falls chronologically.

David McK (3251 KP) rated Concrete Jungle in Books
Jan 30, 2019
I'm not sure which came first, but at the very start you could be forgiven for thinking you're reading Predator 2: the Novelisation, as it is almost an identikit retelling of that film. After a while, however, it does head off on it's own territory, taking in the Colombian jungle of the first film before heading back to New York for the final throw-down.
It's not the best book I've ever read (or even the best based on characters in a film), but it's also not the worst. Passes a few days (two or so) easy reading, at the very least.

Book Divas (227 KP) rated If You Leave This Farm: The Dream Is Destroyed in Books
Dec 12, 2017
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review when I signed up to host the book tour.
Four and a half Stars
This story, which is based on actual events in the life of the author took me completely by surprise, especially since this genre is not a usual read for me. In this book, Amanda Farmer allows us to bear witness to the joy and struggles she faced growing up as a Mennonite living and working on the family's farm and she also shed light on the beliefs of the Mennonite community.
I am in awe of her because she truly went through so much and was still able to maintain her faith and achieve her dreams while dealing with a domineering father, chores, and studies. It takes a resilient and strong person to overcome the things she faced. The story as it is told flowed smoothly and I often found myself crying. This is a book that everyone should read as I believe it inspires you to truly follow your dreams.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2103 KP) rated Granite in Books
Mar 9, 2018
This picture book introduces us to Granite, one of the dogs used by Iditarod Trail racer Susan Butcher in her races in the 1980’s. Granite was the runt of his litter, and but Susan felt a bond to him. Will that bond be enough to win races? What else might the pair endure on their quest to win?
This is a heartwarming picture book for dog lovers of all ages. It captures the love between Susan and Granite perfect with pictures and words. It’s hard not to smile as you read and be concerned for the pair when they face danger. The fact that it is based on a real story makes it all the more memorable.

Louise (64 KP) rated The Lavender Witch in Books
Jul 2, 2018
I was lucky enough to get a free copy of the book from the goodreads giveaway, the description of the book intrigued me as I enjoy books based on true stories. Kitty and Gordon move into their new home in medbury Devon, when after a few days strange things start occurring in the house. Hannah beamish is a legendary witch in Devon and everyone thinks they know what become of her! Or do they?. The story goes back and forth from the 1800's to nowadays. The story written in italics is the story of what happened to Hannah beamish with the 2 stories coming together at the end.
I very much enjoyed this book, it becomes very dark and quite scary at some points, which I am frightened for kitty. I would recommend this book who into ghosts/witchcraft/true events.
