I gave The Hunger Games trilogy a chance, I really did, but I found myself so frustrated with these books. I know all about the comparison to Battle Royale and here and there I do see where Suzanne Collins was influenced by it, but the books are different. For one thing Koushun Takami's book is better.
The problem for me, mainly was with the heroine Katniss. I wanted to like her, but I found I could not care about her at all, even after she did the noble sacrifice of taking her sister's place in The Hunger Games. She seems very cold, apathetic, and just drifting along. For a main character there isn't any depth to her and that's sorely disappointing considering the theme of these books. Then we have this pointless love story that is completely unnecessary to the book and it just seems awkward and forced. The only character who seems real to me at all is Peeta while the other characters seem one dimensional. I also found myself frustrated with Katniss because at so many intervals in the story she just gives up so easily like it's as simple as changing her hair color. Are you kidding me with this nonsense?
I had to keep reminding myself that these were books for young adults and while the writing wasn't bad, the story was not great. If the writing is so poor that you find you can not even care about the characters especially the main one, that's a serious problem. This didn't feel like a dystopian novel at all, sure it was dark and depressing, but that's pretty much it. I need more from something claiming to be a dystopian story. This was more like Dystopia with training wheels. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go read Fahrenheit 451 and Battle Royale again.

This is one of those books/films that I've heard of, but never actually got round to reading before now (perhaps as a sub-conscious reaction to the perceived 'it's just for teenage girls' feeling)

I've previously heard it described as a bloodless Battle Royale for teenagers, but never having read that, I'm not really in a position to compare. What I did notice, though, were the more-than-a-few similarities to Stephen King/Richard Bachman novel The Running Man or even David Brin's The Postman in the dystopian setting (as the latter), and in the idea of a televised game show where people die (the former), and with a wide gap between the haves (i.e The Capitol) and the have-not's (anyone else)(again, from the former).

I'm happy to report, however, that's it's not *just* a for-teenage-girls-only novel: while there is the set-up for a 3-way love triangle to (presumably) later follow, that's actually not the main focus. It's also rather unusual in that it is told in both the present-tense and first person and, while I was never *really* hooked, it was also one of those novels that before I realized it I was more than half-way through!

Great gameplay (4 more)
Fun either playing solo, duo or squads
Expansive maps without being too big
Big selection of guns, equipment and vehicles
Decent graphics
Random bugs and glitches (2 more)
Can run very poorly at times with low FPS and lagging
Cheat players
Fantastic enjoyment although frustrating at times
A solid early access game that has ultimately spawned a number of competitors in the genre.

Whilst this game is by no means the inventor of battle royale style games it has delivered a fun and compelling game that has proven extremely popular.

Having only recently come out of early access the game has just realeased a second map both of which are large with open areas, hill ranges, towns, schools, prisons and more that contain a wide variety of weapons and equipment to arm yourself with.

The game is certainly challenging to win but is top fun win or lose.

The biggest issues with this game currently are the FPS drops and lagging which can be extremely frustrating. The game also suffers with random bugs which sometimes can be funny and other times cause you to die which can also be incredibly irritating. There is also issues with hackers on the game with the developer already banning a considerable number of accounts.

All in all this is a great game that should only get better as the developers continue working on it to improve it and add additional content.
