What a debut it was! They'd arrived for sure. (1 more)
It's loud, crass, funny and superbly entertaining!

Not quite the Beastie Boys at their best, but getting close. Superb sampling and production with awesome, characterful lyricism and witty songs. It is a good idea to read the Wikipedia article while listening to track all the samples and references throughout the album.

"I saw The Beastie Boys when I was about 14, perhaps around the corner at Hammersmith Odeon. I was fucking obsessed. There were loads of twats like me wearing ill-fitting Adidas, looking like Harry Enfield characters. We were so into it, but very young. I started off with Run DMC, though, I liked the stuff where it was just a drum machine and them singing. We were really into Def Jam, and we pre-empted a big wave of other people being into it. I think we saw Run DMC as well, that was a bit tougher. I guess with Beastie Boys, cynically they were just Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin saying ‘let’s make a band for all the white kids’, and we were just gone, we were away."

Superb hip hop album. I was pleasantly surprised to find out Q-Tip was in ATCQ, having loved his contribution to the Beastie Boys' Ill Communication album and appearances on a range of other artists' albums.
This was a great listen overall, particularly Scenario (my daughter loves Pitch Perfect and the start of this song is briefly sung by Fat Amy in one of the song battles).

An incredibly atmospheric live album (Cheap Trick really seem to have been massive in Japan, like Beatlemania level), including "I Want You to Want Me" and a number of other foot-stomping rock and roll songs. One nice little Easter Egg was discovering that the speaking at the end of "I Want You to Want Me" was sampled to introduce "Jimmy James" by the Beastie Boys on Check Your Head.
