"Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty’s 1973 film about a young man and woman in a modern African city who don’t fit in. So they get out. They get far out. The raw energy and often hyper-experimental nature of the music, visuals, and editing make this a favorite. Beautiful. Fully punk."

"I have a special place in my heart for concept albums that take you on a journey, and Kendrick did that in such a beautiful way. He tells his struggle to get out of the gang life he was raised around, and he expresses it in a very vulnerable way."

"His writing, like his thinking, is so clear and beautiful, always eloquent and elegant even when he is writing, as here, about race and religion. There is anger, of course, but somehow he also manages to be witty, and so, so clever. I always imagine he must have been brilliant company."

"This has always seemed to me like a long episode of The Twilight Zone. It’s so eerie and beautiful and once again, the music is key for me. I wish someone would release a remastered version of this score. Unsettling organ music is all the rage currently. At my house, anyway"

"What inspired the film's story? The life of Maurice Pialat? The life of Gérard Depardieu? The film shows a boy having fun while his parents are separating but still loving each other. Depardieu frequently looks almost directly to camera, and it's beautiful. He seems to be having fun like a teenager"

"“Beauty,” Stendhal said, “is the promise of happiness.” James’s story pits the passion for superb objects against the operations of love and the laws of honor. In case you have not read it, I won’t be the spoiler and tell what happens to the beautiful things on the last page."

"Paper Catching Though not really a fight, this sequence of grabbing papers caught in a wind has a special place in my heart. It’s one of the times where we take all the martial arts know-how and use it on a character moment without combat. A beautiful little scene."

Rolling Stone's 361st greatest album of all time
Great soft hip hop album, with more melody than a lot of similar acts, as sufficient focus is given to the music. Featuring the well-known Ms Jackson and a number of lesser known but great songs, particularly Humble Mumble and Slum Beautiful.

I absolutely LOVED "On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness". It's funny, adventurous, magical, and so heartfelt. I loved that it's about family and friendship above all else. It's such a beautiful little tale packed with the tug o' war of conflict, beasties galore, and an unforgettable world!
