Once again, Iain provides a fast-paced and thrilling read starring Sarah Strong and her colleagues at the Major Crimes Unit. From the first page to the last, this book had me absolutely hooked and I fair whizzed through it.
Full of excellent characters, a storyline that is not beyond the realms of reality (scarily so!) and written at a pace that fair trots along, this is a story well written and exciting and one that I would definitely recommend. Although you don't have to have read the others in the series, you won't be disappointed if you do but it does work as a standalone quite well.
I would definitely recommend to others who enjoy getting engrossed in the world of major crimes.

I actually read this as the first part in a 3-book compilation ("THE RIFLEMAN DANDO ADVENTURES three action-packed historical military thrillers"), thinking it may be something interesting, something akin to Bernard Cornwell's Napoleonic-set Sharpe series, or to Paul Fraser Collard's 'Jack Lark' series.
While the history may be - and, for me, was - interesting, unfortunately the plot around the rest of the story was not all that much so. I have to say, I also found the phonetic spelling "See 'ere" rather off-putting, although understandable in that the soldiers were usually drawn from the lower classes rather than the posh higher classes.
I also found the flashbacks to a pre-soldier Dando, and just how he came to be a redcoat, actually more interesting than the 'current events' of the Indian mutiny, for some reason.
Still, I'll read the next two as well at some point (but doubt I'll be going out of my way beyond that)

I love the way in this is written - it's lyrical with a nod to the style of Shakespeare, Nydia Hetherington gives a reason for Sycorax's differences: her physical difference is due to illness and injury, her witch qualities are due to the fact that she simply knows too much for a woman in a time where women shouldn't have known anything beyond childbirth, motherhood and housework.
And then there's the element of magic that runs throughout the novel - which is always a winner as far as I'm concerned. A really enjoyable novel.

We seem to get an adventure with many different folks. It starts with wanting to find out who and why his sister was killed.
Why does everyone want the money? Or is it something else that they want?
There seem to be quite a few dead bodies along the way. Someone seems to be cleaning up his messes. Who wants Lou dead? Why do they want the money? Though there seems to be another plot going on, it seems that someone keeps coming after Lou.
That person seems to think he knows this tech or has it or something. Though Lou seems to have found a woman as well, and maybe a little romance come about. What will happen to him and the young woman he first meets?
Will he solve the mystery of how his sister was killed? Why was she killed?
