How many ways did I love this audiobook? Perhaps too many to count. The simple fact that A.J. Jacobs' voice is like a cross between modern Jews a couple of generations removed from the old country and Caroll Spinney was completely enticing to me. His narrative of his great idea and project was perfectly paced and incredibly funny. Being a big fan of genealogy shows myself, I was enticed by his insights into the process, products, and services available. I agree wholeheartedly that it is the family anecdotes, the stories and coincidences passed down through the generations that are stronger than scientific results on a print out. However, when you really get down to it, there is so little that separates us, and so much more to come that will connect us in the future. Fantastic work and a terrific book.

I have been a big fan of cross-country, road-trip type novels ever since reading The Talisman, so I was excited to get my hands on this book. Fallow was some trip! The details of the incident that landed Mikey in jail are fed to the reader bit-by-bit, and the more you start to realize what happened, the harder it is to put this book down. Once I spotted the twist headed my way, I had to keep reading until I got to the end. I just had to know what exactly happened years ago, and how it would all end up in the present. This was a thrilling debut novel, and I’ll be watching for more from this author.

NOTE: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of the book.

I bought this book ages ago because I watched the film and enjoyed it.
Every review I've seen has said how comical the story is, and how good a book it is.
I must admit I laughed a couple of times, and I enjoyed the story, it was well written and I got through it quite quickly.
That being said however, reading it in 2021, I found certain aspects of it slightly offensive. And also thought the way that she portrayed the starkadders was quite cruel. To me the book portrayed a sense of 'us city folk are better than you country folk.' . Maybe that was the big joke, but I didn't find it very amusing.
All on all it was an alright read, definitely nothing amazing as I've always thought it was hyped up to be.

Admittedly I have never been much of a dolly fan, nothing against her but I'm not into country music. Saying that, I did go into this with an open mind.
From the moment she is on screen she comes across as very likeable and down to earth, she even makes fun of her plastic surgery which sadly has ruined her looks, but we all know it's what's inside that counts.
She's definitely passionate about her work and very political, she also seems to be a very private person. The documentary has interviews with a few big names including Kylie minogue and Jane fonda but nobody had any dirt or juicy gossip, in fact this is the only documentary I've watched so far where's there's been nothing negative about the celeb. It does leave you wanting to know more.

"My abiding memory really, was spending several months in Ireland in a big country mansion, post-Welcome To The Pleasuredome, and attempting to write songs for the Liverpool album while travelling the world with Frankie and things. We were in the house of the King of Leinster, who'd decided to rent it out to pop groups who needed rehearsal space - I think the Thompson Twins had been there previously - and Paul [Rutherford, Frankie singer], who I think is an even bigger Kate Bush fan than me, brought the album and it never left the turntable. We knew that Julian Mendelsohn, who'd mixed 'Relax' and 'Two Tribes', had been involved in it. It just stayed on the turntable for what seemed like months, over and over and over again. Almost to its detriment in a way. It's just an incredible record. What more you can say?"
