"When I was young I became a huge Fellini fan and realised there was just one person doing the music for all his films. Casanova is one of the lesser known Fellini films I'd say. I hadn't seen it until my girlfriend and I watched it about five years ago. It blew me away because it's one of the spookiest; it's a very bizarre film, and the visual and musical landscape are both edgy and weird, as well as sexy. It's one of my favourites now. Nino Rota is perhaps my favourite composer now. I feel like something happened in the 60s with film scores where these classically trained composers were suddenly expanding their palettes to include synths, electric harpsichords and guitars. Nino Rota has really influenced me a lot, he chooses spooky notes and disturbing sounds, although I never knew about the Casanova score until 6 or 7 years ago. My girlfriend started watching the film with Donald Sutherland and we couldn't believe the soundtrack, it was so interesting and moody. It turned out to be my favourite Nino Rota score, even though I hadn't heard it until then."

"Yeah, and The Island of Lost Souls is amazing, from 1932 with Charles Laughton as Dr. Moreau. That movie is amazing. That movie’s dark. For anyone who hasn’t seen it, the extras — I mean, even now you watch like, this is really disturbing. The extras are supposed to be the half-man/half-animal people. You can tell they got really bizarre-looking extras before they did the makeup, and everybody looks like they’re deformed and f—ed up. Again, Lugosi plays the leader of the beast men. He’s not in it a lot, but of course he has the line that everybody remembers about the House of Pain: “He who breaks the law goes back to the House of Pain.” He’s in the movie for five minutes and steals the movie. Charles Laughton is incredible. But it’s demented again. The basic premise is a crazy one. They have the beast men and they’re being operated on and just screaming. It’s like, “This is not fun.” You have little kids running out of the theater in tears, or adults. It’s amazing. Still amazing. The cinematography’s amazing. Everything about it is just incredible."

"Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a filmmaker that I’ve since followed, you know, throughout his career and I think he’s one of my favorites and a kind of, you know, a very distinctive voice in France, but that film still I think is probably my favorite of his. I feel like he kind of almost returned to form a little bit with Micmacs. Micmacs really reminded me of Delicatessen in terms of its vibe. But Delicatessen is just, there’s a great amount of comedy to it, the characters are so bizarre and so well-drawn. The world is so strange, it’s not totally relatable. It’s very funny. It’s very dark. I remember when I saw that movie, I’d never seen anything like it. And I think by the time I saw Delicatessen for the first time, City of Lost Children had already come and gone. But Delicatessen was the first thing that I’d seen. And , you know, from an art direction standpoint, I think I was also so unbelievably impressed, because it was him and his partner, and I can’t remember his partner’s name who was also kind of like his art director."
