Absolutely hilarious
Podcasts aren't usually my thing, however working from home full time has made me go insane listening to my usual music and radio shows. A few of my friends have recommended this podcast on numerous occasions so thought I'd give something different a go... now I'm just mega peeved that I hadn't started listening to this sooner!

This is possibly the funniest thing I've ever heard. Let's be honest, this isn't for the faint hearted or those easily offended as it's pretty explicit, but boy is it laugh out loud hilarious. The funniest thing is the fact that this is actually a real book series written by Jamie Morton's dad (aka Rocky Flintstone) and that this hasn't just been written to make fun. His writing style is bonkers and the way it moves from mundane description to ridiculous and completely unappealing porn scenarios is so bizarre. And then listening to this book being narrated by Jamie just adds to the laughs. Listening to his, Alice Levine's and James Cooper's commentary feels like you're sat in a room with friends listening and chatting about it in person. They pick on every grammatical error and plot hole, and not to mention the ridiculous scenarios and inept sales work.

Can't fault this at all, it's downright hilarious and I'll be very sad if/when I get to the last episode.

It's a bit difficult to know where to start with a movie like Tiptoes, where an arguably unpromising idea is coupled to at least one deeply suspect creative decision. Basically, this is a look at what it means to be a short person, or the parents of one, in the modern world, realised through a peculiar rom-com plot about twin brothers (one of whom is a short person) getting involved with the same girl. If you think this sounds odd, there is a ten-year age-gap between the twin brothers, and the short one is played by Gary Oldman through the wonders of him kneeling down on his shoes. (Oldman has said playing a short person was 'a stretch', which is an interesting choice of words.) Meanwhile, a subplot concerns a French Marxist biker short person played by Peter Dinklage.

It may all be very well-intentioned and motivated by genuine sympathy for the short person community, but the sight of Oldman kneeling down behind various low objects or embedded in a sofa with fake short legs attached to it disastrously sabotages the film. That said, even if they'd opted for more height-appropriate casting, I suspect the contrived melodrama of the movie would still be difficult to take seriously. A deeply bizarre film, and perhaps deservedly obscure.

"They were very theatrical. Alex Harvey was 40 something, he was an old guy. And - at the time - that was ancient for rock n roll. He won the Scottish Tommy Steele competition in 1957. The prize? Meeting Tommy Steele! What a bizarre business. That was two years before I was born and he must have been in his late teens/early 20s by then. To be in your early 40s and starting out was unheard of. David Bowie and Alex Harvey knew each other, actually: they bonded over a shared love of Jacques Brel. 'Faith Healer' is one of the best things that ever came out of the 70s. And the end triplet of 'Last Of The Teenage Idols' – which is about the competition that he won. That was amazing. I loved his voice: he screamed his way through life. His version of 'Crazy Horses' is hilarious. He did a song called 'There's No Lights on the Xmas Tree Mother… They're Burning Big Louis Tonight'. It was about a guy in the electric chair who takes all the power off the grid on the night of his death. Nobody in this little town in America gets the Xmas lights. What a brilliant idea for a song. It was theatrics and bravado. Alex Harvey was off kilter - it wasn't like The Sweet or Mud, he was musically brilliant."

Hack-O-Lantern is a ride. It boasts a simple plot about a Satanic cult grooming a young boy all the way through adult hood to join their ranks, whilst his siblings just try to enjoy teenage life, and a maniac in a devil mask runs about town killing folk with a pitchfork, all on Halloween night. Standard slasher stuff, but with randomly thrown in music videos, strip teases, and belly dancing. The film even stops dead for a few minutes to show us a stand up comedy routine. It's really really odd.

The whole experience is ball achingly 80s, complete with questionable acting, awkward dialogue, passable gore effects, and an absolutely raging music score. All of the music just sounds like Final Fantasy battle music. It's incredible.

Hack-O-Lantern was aired as part of Joe Bob Briggs 2020 Halloween Special, and is worth a watch to gain some insight into why this films is so weird and disjointed, such as director Jag Mundhra speaking very little English accounting for some of the bizarre dialogue, and his Indian background explaining the out of place Bollywood elements sprinkled throughout. It's a pretty fascinating and quirky horror all in all.

If you're looking for a cheap, ridiculous, and absurd 80s horror, then this ticks all the right boxes.
