"I had reservations about choosing this film because the women in it are somewhat victimized, but I hugely admire Melville’s work, and this is a new discovery. Le doulos is particularly terse and gloomy in black and white, stripped of any fat whatsoever. There’s a complicated plot that’s almost impossible (for me) to follow, but it all boils down to the question of who can be trusted. The men all pretty much dress alike and come to seem interchangeable. The violence is abrupt and shocking, and the story is full of reversals. Most of all, I love the ending, where Belmondo’s character forces us to reinterpret everything we’ve just seen in a new light."

I’ve never read Dennis Lehane before - and what a place to start! This novel is phenomenal, and I ended it thoroughly heartbroken.

1970s Boston, America, and the school districts want to merge the separate schools for black and white children. Except your average white Southie doesn’t want that to happen, and they’ll do anything to ensure that.

There are violent demonstrations, tensions boil over, and amongst all this a young black man is murdered. At the same time, Mary Pat Fennessy’s daughter goes missing. At first, these two events seem unconnected, but as Mary Pat searches for her daughter it starts to look otherwise. And somehow, the Irish mob are involved.

Mary Pat is the ultimate tiger mother. Her daughter Jules, is her only surviving child, and she’ll stop at nothing to find her - dead or alive.

This is brutal, and proves that ultimately revenge profits no one. The heat simmered off the page, as did the threatened and real violence. The writing is gorgeous despite the violence, and is a masterclass in how a writer can make the most ugly things so astonishing.

I’m expecting to see a film adaptation of this at some point - it reads like a screenplay.

This may well be my first novel by Lehane, but I doubt very much that it will be my last. Thanks for introducing me to another new-to-me author, Pigeonhole!

Twisted Swan
Black Swan- is a excellent psychological horror thriller. Darren Aronofsky does a excellent job playing the views minds. Natalie Portman does a excellent job.

The plot: Nina (Natalie Portman) is a ballerina whose passion for the dance rules every facet of her life. When the company's artistic director decides to replace his prima ballerina for their opening production of "Swan Lake," Nina is his first choice. She has competition in newcomer Lily (Mila Kunis) however. While Nina is perfect for the role of the White Swan, Lily personifies the Black Swan. As rivalry between the two dancers transforms into a twisted friendship, Nina's dark side begins to emerge.

Its a excellent film and a must watch.

Rolling Stone's 71st greatest album of all time
Paul Simon's "discovery" of South African musical styles and using them to restart his flagging career after splitting up with Garfunkel and reducing sales on his solo albums. Musically more interesting than his other efforts, I would still rather listen to the artists that inspired it. I find Paul Simon to be quite weaselly and I can't get past that. The album was unarguably ground-breaking for its time (except a white man using music of black origin for his own gain, that was nothing new) and I would hope opened doors for world music artists.

A real hit or miss show for me.
Don't get me wrong I enjoy Black Mirror but the show can be a real hit or miss for me because when it's good it's freaking AMAZING! But when it drags I lose all interest. For me personally White Bear was my favorite episode if Season 2 and I really loved the twist they came up with but then you have a dumpster fire like the Waldo episode which I really hated.
