Haecity (2 KP) rated The Aeronaut's Windlass in Books

Disappointing from this author
I love Butcher, and this had all the marks of one of his series. But I found the story for the most part to be very dry. I listened to this on audio at 1.5x speed to get through it and still felt that it was sort of flat, I felt the same during the peaks as I did for the rest of the book.
I'm sure it will get better later in the series, all his first books have been sort of like that, but I am unlikely to continue with the story. The takes on the cats were pretty fun, but overall I'm disappointed.

In depth story with great series potential
I’ve jumped on the ‘must read before the tv series’ and I’m really glad I did. I’ve been meaning to read this ever since it came out but TBRs are what they are. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience, it was well-researched and deep.
Working in academia, I appreciated the context and the attention to detail was excellent in this area. The story was engaging and satisfying but complicated. I read and listened to this book dependant on what I was doing and it was defintely harder to concentrate with the audio at times.
I’m looking forward to the rest of the books.

B (62 KP) rated The 10th Kingdom - Season 1 in TV
Nov 2, 2018
First of all, being a fan of BBC period dramas, I absolutely love the genre of the TV mini-series. And The 10th Kingdom is one of my all-time favorite. I remember watching it our recorded copy on video cassette (hard to believe its that old ?) as a child and I'm pretty sure that it was the source of my fascination with fairy tales. The special effects are actually surprisingly good. It's a pity that it took them so long to make this first series because it would have been interesting to learn about some of the other kingdoms in the second "book." Overall, such an amazing cult classic ?
LilyLovesIndie (123 KP) rated These Happy Golden Years (Little House, #8) in Books

Easily my favourite book of the series by far! Laura grows up and marries, and her life really does start afresh in such a lovely and touching way.
The story is so lovely and concludes the series so beautifully in such a touching manner that it was just beautiful. I'm gushing, I know, and will probably edit this further when I read again in the future. The style, and happiness is overwhelmingly needed and so much better that the others.
I'm struggling to describe how much I love this and quite why, but I think it is just a simple case of a happily ever after.

David McK (3377 KP) rated Blood Rites (The Dresden Files, #6) in Books
Jan 28, 2019
Book number 6 in Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series, and the quality shows no signs of letting up.
This time, Harry Dresden is hired by his vampire acquantaince Thomas Raith to investigate a series of highly unusual murders surrounding an adult movie maker, which leads to further revelations (previously hinted at in earlier books) about Harry's own mysterious past, and just why Thomas has been an occassional ally ...
While I reckon it is probably possible to read this as a 'stand-alone' novel, it's probably best to have read the previous five books first in order to understand a few of the references made during the course of this one.
