As with all the other Maeve Binchy books I've read, I loved this one too! 12 chapters...one for each month of the year in which the book takes place. Great story between Tom and Cathy, two catering school buddies who decide to open up their own catering business. There are side stories about the other characters in the book and they all intertwine. Maeve Binchy is a wonderful storyteller and this book did not disappoint. There was a time when I didn't think I would finish it before I had to return it to the library...I did renew it once! LOL!

The description of the book (who crashed a private jet killing nearly everyone on board) makes it sound like another twisty-turny thriller along the lines of "The Girl on the Train", and while the central mystery does have some surprises and keeps one wanting to read, this is actually a much smarter book than that. It is far more interested in human nature, what makes each of us what we are, how we cope with tragedy, and how our minds can jump to make conclusions that aren't there. It even manages to dig into themes like art, the recent financial crisis, and the 24-hour news cycle. All of the characters are interesting and very well written. Everything seems entirely believable and the book is full of moments of genuine emotion. Those looking for another trendy "thriller-of-the-month" might be disappointed, but anyone looking for a truly great novel, possibly one of the year's best, should pick this up.

I have been cross stitching for 30 years and learned how to punch needle 3 years ago. I have always wanted to learn the technique of embroidery. I love taking a piece of cloth and turning it into a piece of art but was always too intimidated to try my hand at embroidery. This week, I was able to put my fears aside when I received an ARC of A Year of Embroidery by Yumiko Higuchi from Netgalley.
A Year of Embroidery: A Month-To-Month Collection of Motifs for Seasonal Stitching, is a book which helped me get over the fear of embroidery and instilled a passion for learning!
My review is through the eyes of a beginner, but the book is for all levels of embroidery technique. I like that the book is not only chock full of patterns but helpful instruction and placement ideas, as well. The designs range from beautiful to whimsical and feature flowers, cacti, seashells, birds, people, reptiles, insects and animals. Each pattern also gives the DMC number for each floss the author used in her designs. Yumiko Higuchi made sure to include several designs for each month of the year, some with a retro feel and others with a more modern take on embroidery.
The ARC I received of this book is in a protected format and I am not able to make any of the patterns provided. With the wealth of information, A Year of Embroidery holds and the number of patterns I adore, this will be on my bookshelf as soon as it becomes available. I cannot wait to try my hand at this new needlecraft and hope that many others will enjoy it as much as I have.

WOW … I LOVE this.
Just got a copy of This Diary for an honest review …. and… WOW!
It’s ring bound and lies flat … so much easier to just leave open on a desk and look quickly rather than having to squish it down and half breaking the spine. The A5 size is big enough to not get lost, but still small enough that i could put it in my handbag (there is a smaller version available too if that would be more what you would look for)
It’s bright and colourful … knowing a small amount about colour therapy the overall scheme of the book is relaxing and positive colours.
Every month has a theme … January is Happiness, Feb is Creativity and so forth. the front page of the month explains your “task” for the month, each 2 page spread has a quote from inspirational people that relates to that theme, and a smaller contemplative sub-task for the week.
There is a really good amount of space to write in each day … as a parent this gives me LOADS of room to write down all the appointments for the 4 humans and 2 felines in the household, much more than a basic calendar (the normal way) which usually has a tiny bx or one line only per day.
At the end of each month is a 2 page spread where you can reflect on the past month and the things you have learned. Could be interesting to look back on in future years.
Overall I am very impressed, and will actually use this one (unlike the several that end up being abandoned in a drawer somewhere).
Would I recommend … Absolutely.
