Merissa (12351 KP) rated Snowy White World to Save in Books

A simple yet clever book to read to children. They will love the illustrations, I know I did, as the story unfolds about a mother and her cubs. A strong message is put in a way that the children will enjoy and remember, rather than just being scared.

David McK (3496 KP) rated Devil's Charge (Civil War Chronicles #2) in Books
Jan 30, 2019
The second book in Michael Arnold's planned Captain Stryker series of books, all set during the time of the English Civil War.
Despite being one of the defining period in English history, it's actually a subject rarely touched upon: when I was at school, we were taught more about the American Civil War than about the English counter-part! Short of this series, I can't - personally - think of any other novels set in and around the same period.
Like Cornwell's Sharpe series of books, the events of this are all set in and around real historical events: in this case, the storming of Cirencester, the siege of Lichfield and the battle of Hopton Heath. If I'm honest, I wasn't familiar with any of these events, which is something I've always enjoyed about this type of book: a chance to learn some new history while also enjoying a good read! :)

Leanne Crabtree (480 KP) rated Matched (Matched #1) in Books
Jan 6, 2021
2.5 stars.
I normally really like dystopia books but this dragged for me. It was very slow going and not much seemed to happen. It was mainly following Cassia around in her social life and meeting up with Ky occasionally.
The start was promising. I liked the idea of having matches and that hers was with her friend but then came the flash of Ky on her port and I was intrigued where it was going to go from there...and in a very long winded, round-about way we kind of found out.
The best bit for me was probably about 20 pages from the end when Cassia is having the conversation with the Official. Eye-opening conversation...though not enough for me to be bothered about continuing the series.
I like books with continuous action and this was so slow, it's taken me over a week to read instead of the two/three days normally.

Leanne Crabtree (480 KP) rated Undeniable (Undeniable, #1) in Books

I liked a lot of things about this but there were also things I didn't like, like Frankie. What the hell was wrong with him?
Not sure how I feel about biker books; I don't like some of the things they do: sleeping with "club whores" while they have wives at home. Doesn't make them very likeable, especially Deuce in this, though he pulled through in the end but not without me wanting to punch him in the face a few times.
Cox, I could forgive because he did the right thing in the end and he always remembered Kami.
I also kinda liked Dorothy, too, so I really hope the guy (who's name I cant quite remember at the minute. Jace?) does the right thing by her because he seems to really care about her and she loves him, whether they're both married or not.
I'll certainly be reading the other books in the series, especially book 4, since that's Dorothy's book.

Goddess in the Stacks (553 KP) rated Kiss of Steel in Books
Sep 6, 2017
Well paced plot and action (3 more)
Great dialogue
Fleshed out characters
Amazing world-building
Victorian Steampunk with vampires, mechs, and werewolves. AND AWESOME.
Holy crap. I have only read the first two of this series – I have three more to read. (My Lady Quicksilver, Forged By Desire, and Of Silk and Steam, with a second series in the same universe called The Blue Blood Conspiracy.) (Edit: I have now read three and four, and they are also excellent!)
THESE ARE SO GOOD.
Victorian Steampunk in London with vampires, mechs, and werewolves (sort of) with romance, a political conspiracy plot, and plenty of action? YES PLEASE. These books are excellently written, with a hefty plot that moves at a perfect pace. Both romances have been very believable and intertwined seamlessly with the larger world’s plot. Each book is a hefty length, enough to really get absorbed in and flesh out everything that needs to be covered, without dragging on and getting old. The characters are fascinating – even the side characters are interesting enough that I really hope future books focus on them.
I don’t have a single bad thing to say about this series, and I can’t wait to read the next books. I am forcing myself to take a break from the series, even though I have the next two books, because I have library books that are due sooner that I need to read!

Colin Campbell (25 KP) rated Audible – audio books, original series & podcasts in Apps
Apr 30, 2019
Choice of books (2 more)
Frequent 2 for 1 offers
Stephen Fry Narration
Some narrators (1 more)
Some books in a series are missing
Too many books, not enough time...
What can I say about Audible that hasn't been mentioned in other reviews? Probably nothing ?
I live near London and unfortunately the commute is hell, reading makes the commute go faster but with train carriages packed like cattle you can't really turn the pages of a book. This is where Audible comes in, you can unobtrusively listen to books that you may be embarrassed to show others that you are reading (eg The Very Hungry Caterpillar)
This isn't the only thing, you also get the options to listen to Audible specific Audio Shows like Frys English Delights and How Not to F**k up your kids, these are free for subscribers and pro ide a nice 30 minute piece of escapism.
Some Kindle Books come whispersync enabled which gives you an Audible copy of the book, sometimes cheaper than buying the audio book individually.
I also have the Audible app on my Fire Stick and with the sleep timer you can easily fall asleep listening to a well narrated piece of work.
Now the cons...
Not all narrators are actually good to listen to, Unfortunately it would take too much time to get more recorded and taking into account their schedules.
Some series are incomplete and it does not look they will be recorded sometime soon (Julian May, Many Coloured Land)
