BankofMarquis (1832 KP) rated The Iron Giant (1999) in Movies
Jun 14, 2020
And that is too bad...for the film that was released - THE IRON GIANT - is a wonderfully warm and heartwarming tale of friendship, acceptance and, yes, intolerance of those different from you, set against the backdrop of the Cold War of the 1950's.
Marking the full length feature animation Directing debut by Brad Bird (THE INCREDIBLES), THE IRON GIANT tells the tale of young Hogarth, who finds a...well...Iron Giant... who has fallen to Earth from Outer Space. Hogarth befriends The Iron Giant and helps to hide him from Military-types who see this as a threat to the safety, security and superiority of the United States.
Featuring the vocal talents of Jennifer Aniston, John Mahoney, Harry Connick, Jr., Christopher McDonald and Eli Marienthal (as Hogarth), this film is warm and inviting, showing "good characters" that you want to root for and spend time with spar with "bad guys" that you want to see defeated. All of this over a character that is naive to what is going on around him. Special notice should be made of Vin Diesel's vocal work as The Iron Giant. He says very few things, but the words that he does say, convey strong emotions.
You can see the seeds of THE INCREDIBLES in this work of Director Bird. The action sequences are fun and effective and are off-set by slower, more personal, scenes of the characters getting to know - and interact with - each other. He shows a deft touch in balancing these items, finding the right amount of pathos and pace throughout.
The main themes in this film - fearing that which you do not know/do not care to understand resonates to this day and is a reminder that kindness can go much further than fear/ignorance/intolerance.

Merissa (14082 KP) rated Captivated by Dominik (The Ralston Brothers) in Books
Jan 27, 2026
Sienna has quite a strong gift, but the downside of that is that she has been contracted every year for a 12-month "marriage". She is on a dual mission to New Columbia, where the Royal Governor has taken a bit of a slimy shine to her, so she needs Dominik to help with that, as well as their other mission. It doesn't help that her boss is on the dodgy side, too! Poor Sienna.
Their relationship worked perfectly! It was both hot and slow-burn. Dominik was understandably p!ssed about how Sienna had been treated in the past, both by her boss and by her so-called husbands. I loved how he gave her the control and never once pushed her beyond what she was comfortable with.
If I had one niggle, it would be that the informant was never named. We know it's a 'he', but that's it, and that just about killed me. The only male that sprang to mind was her stylist, but I'm really hoping it wasn't him. I would love to know who it actually was!
This series promises delights with the Ralston clan. I love how we see the siblings interact, and I can't wait for more. Of course, some of the Ralston clan have already found their mates, but there is so much more to come. And, of course, I do hope Markus and Bella show up occasionally too!
One final comment - have you seen that cover? It's absolutely gorgeous, reflects the book, and look how wonderful Alstair is! A great read that I thoroughly enjoyed and HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Merissa (14082 KP) rated His Forbidden Alliance (Forbidden Mafia #3) in Books
Mar 20, 2026
Rafe is the youngest brother, the playboy of the family. His brothers both love him, but don't always say so. Rafe is also aware that they don't expect much from him either. So when Remington, his cousin, offers the Casino Fortuna for him to run, Rafe is ecstatic. Unfortunately for the Theriots, Ivanov is still out there somewhere, so they keep their eyes and ears open.
Zach works for the FBI and wants to take Ivanov down. It became personal for Zach when Ivanov killed an informant of Zach's, after 'playing' first. He sees the casino as a way in, especially with the playboy in charge. He quickly realises how much he has underestimated Rafe. The action gets hot, and the relationship with Zach and Rafe even hotter.
This was the best of the bunch for me! I loved how Zach and Rafe were together, neither of them fully trusting the other, but falling hard anyway. And the fact that Zach let Rafe be a little psycho was perfect. There is plenty of action in here leading to Ivanov, but I won't say more than that. Although there is a last-minute miscommunication, it furthers the story and is quickly resolved. Well, not that quickly, but, you know, circumstances, etc.
I did receive an unedited ARC, so there were moments where the wrong name was used, but it was easy to figure out who was meant. A great read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am loving this series, and hope to read more in the future. Definitely recommended.

Merissa (14082 KP) rated Maxim (Fueled By Lust #6) in Books
Apr 11, 2023
This is a fast-paced book (or maybe it was the speed that I was reading as I simply could not put it down!) with an incredible storyline that involves spoilt, little rich men, psychic abilities, and even the gods. There is never a dull moment and plenty of laughter along the way.
I love the relationship that Maxim has with his brothers and this is evident in the book. The relationship between Maxim and Skylar is both fast and slow. The attraction is instant (as Maxim finds out in the airport) but the rest of it, with love and trust being the biggies, takes time to develop. I loved the explanation given by Skylar about insta-love!
This book has it all for me - action, adventure, a hot alpha male, a smart and feisty female, and sex that scorches the pages. The only trouble I have is leaving the Insedi behind. I feel the need to re-read every one of these books again and I don't say that about every book I read!
