Jason Bourne (2016)
Jason Bourne (2016)
2016 | Action, Drama
Matt Damon returns to the role of the amnesiac Jason Bourne - following the underwhelming The Bourne Legacy - now living in hiding and prize-fighting for a living.

However, when ex-CIA operative Nicky Parson's tracks him down (Julia Stiles, and I was rather surprised at one scene featuring her!), he's pulled back into the fray, uncovering more details about his past along the way in a plot that takes in (takes on?) the concept of Government Surveillance.

Mrs. Pollifax heads to China to find out the location of a forced labor camp so the CIA can free a political prisoner. As much as I love the series, this is a disappointment. It reads more like a travelogue for too much of the book, which doesn't give the plot enough time when it is finally tries to go somewhere.

A Great Place to Have a War by Joshua Kurlantzick is a book about the history of Laos. The synopsis caught by eye since I lived and worked in Laos for a year as an English teacher. The book is about the conflict which occurred in Laos roughly during the same period of the Vietnam War. This is an interesting and impressive book, yet depressing. Details the rise of the CIA as a war machine during the Vietnam War, which was fought to a great extent in Laos. It looks at some of people involved in building the war to epic proportions, and then withdrawing, leaving the country to collapse into yet more suffering.

This is a fascinating look at the shadow war in Laos, staged by the CIA, during the Vietnam War. It's an extremely interesting history of the how that war came to be, some of the main people involved in that war, and the rise of the CIA as an organization conducting paramilitary operations, not just spy missions. It also relates the political intrigues of the time, and the fate of Hmong who fought for Laos, and with and for America.

I learned a lot about the history of the conflict itself, and the characters on both sides of the war. This war which has been hidden in the shadows, and the author has given the people involved a chance to have their deeds, or misdeeds aired in the light of day. As with most of the little wars that occurred during the Cold War period, there is a lot of political manoeuvring which occurs in the background.

Mrs. Pollifax is on her first investigative assignment when the CIA sends her to a resort in Switzerland to find the stolen plutonium. But suddenly, she finds herself on her own just hoping to figure everything out before the villain catches up with her. I loved this book just as much on the reread as I did the first time over a decade ago.

Ben is delighted when the CIA asks him to join an elite spy school. But when his life is endangered within hours of arriving on campus, he begins to rethink things. Can he stay alive long enough to find out who wants to kill him? Yes, the book is aimed at kids, but I had a blast reading it. The story moved quickly with some good twists, and I really liked Ben.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan- Season 1
Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan- Season 1
2018 | Action
I love the Jack Ryan series, and it has continued with his son of the same name. Obviously, this series on Amazon Prime is about Jack Ryan, the son, just starting out in the CIA. The series has a lot of action and the suspense that we've become accustomed to in films based on Tom Clancy's novels. I enjoyed the entire series, but don't think it was quite up to where his father would have been, if that makes sense. I look forward to season two, as his career moves forward.

The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
2004 | Action, Drama, Mystery
Matt Damon second outing as Jason Bourne, with the amnesiac assassin hiding out on India, but then being pulled back into action when he is framed for the murder of CIA agents during a government operation in Berlin, and after a tragedy strikes.

Like The Bourne Identity before it, this has some bruising action sequences (while, perhaps, the 'shaky cam' is overdone), culminating in an impressive car chase sequence through and under the streets of Moscow, after which the film seems to run out of steam but still goes on for a bit!

American Assassin (2017)
American Assassin (2017)
2017 | Action, Thriller
Story: American Assassin starts as normal American Mitch Rapp (O’Brien) sees his fiancée gunned down by terrorists and himself left for dead, 18 months later he has trained himself to eliminate the men responsible but little does he know that CIA agent Irene Kennedy (Lathan) has been watching his action.

When Kennedy arranges to save Mitch from a certain death, she recruits him for a special section of the CIA working under Stan Hurley (Keaton) who trains agents to go undercover but if caught or killed no one will come for them.

The first mission is to locate nuclear weapon components before former agent Ghost (Kitsch) can use or sell them giving somebody in the world a nuclear bomb that can wipe out millions.

Thoughts on American Assassin

Characters – Mitch Rapp is an American that loses everything at the hands of terrorists, he learns combat and language skills to go undercover in the terrorist cell for revenge, he gets recruited by the CIA where he must learn discipline but this is where he struggles because he always wants to go after the criminal. This character does feel like a young Jack Bauer because of his rule breaking attitude for the right reasons. Stan Hurley is the off the grid trainer who takes Mitch as part of his unit, he gets tired of the Mitch’s lack of discipline but knows he needs him to capture his former student. Irene Kennedy is the deputy director of the CIA, she sees the potential in Mitch forcing Hurley to take him on, but also falls into the standard CIA director figure that will risk their reputation to prove others wrong. Ghost is the former trainee of Hurley that is using all the skills gained to stay one step ahead of him while collecting the nuclear components.

Performances – Dylan O’Brien is an actor that got into the young adult films but this role showed an adult character, showing he could go onto action films without looking like the complete actions star. Michael Keaton looks like he did enjoy the mentoring role while also getting the action role he isn’t known for. Sanaa Lathan is good in her role even if the character is very generic. Taylor Kitsch does seem to be on the recovering his career tour showing everyone just how talented he is in the villainous role.

Story – The story does play out like an origin story for Mitch Rapp in the CIA, we see what motivated him to accept the offer, we see what makes him different from other potential agents. We have the standard level of threat, potential nuclear weapon and a story of needing to learn discipline to become a top agent while keeping his unique traits. This is an easy to watch but could easily be an over the top pilot for a television show.

Action/Thriller – The action starts out brutal with the terrorist attack, we also fall into the car chases, fights and shoot outs which are fun to watch, the final action sequences is just popcorn wow.

Settings – The settings take us on a tour of Europe which is fine and is giving us an iconic location moment, which is easy to locate for us.

Special Effects – The effects in the opening sequence are brutal but then it just becomes by the book stuff.

Scene of the Movie – Speed Boat fight.

That Moment That Annoyed Me – While it started with violent level, it did turn into Jack Bauer origin feeling.

Chances of Sequel: Easily could have one.

Post Credits Scene: No

Final Thoughts – This is an action film that is fun but not one of the greatest of the year.

Overall: Fun action packed blast.

3 Days To Kill (2014)
3 Days To Kill (2014)
2014 | Mystery
Contains spoilers, click to show
Story: 3 Days to Kill starts as we meet CIA agent Ethan Renner (Costner) who along with his team is about to take down one of the biggest threats in the world The Wolf (Sammel) by eliminating his closest associate The Albino (Lemarquis) only the mission gets compromised when Ethan’s health catches up with him as he learns he only has 3 months to live.

Released by the CIA Ethan sets out on cleaning up his own personal affairs wanting to build a relationship with daughter Zooey (Steinfeld) through his ex-wife Christine (Nielsen) after years of times apart working. With everything going badly Ethan knows that it will become difficult but when fellow agent Vivi Delay (Heard) offers him a chance to live longer Ethan comes out of retirement for one last assignment.

Thoughts on 3 Days to Kill

Story – The story for this film tries to balance a dying man’s final months with his family and his CIA life that he has meant to have walked away from. The CIA story does feel very generic of this modern day slick hitman style which is all fine. The dying man’s wish story ends up feeling like an awkward comedy in places. The story also feels very long and doesn’t seem to end up deciding if it wants to be serious or not.

Action/Thriller – The action is all very good and entertaining with the opening sequence looking like it set the tone but in the end if just turns into another slick hitman film.

Characters/Performance – I can’t find anything wrong with Costner’s performance as well as Steinfeld or Neilsen, it is the Heard performance that doesn’t make sense because she doesn’t suit the character and the character doesn’t suit the movie. The movie tries to make all the characters fit into everyday experiences but for some reason Vivi character is wildly over the top for no apparent reason.

Settings – The settings are mostly all in Paris which all works for the film which is trying to make us have a location we want to visit but showing that crime can happen there I guess.

Special Effects – The Special effects are mostly used for the action sequences and they all come off to the level you need them too.

Final Thoughts –This is an overlong action thriller that ends up getting caught up in the middle of comedy too often for its own good.

Overall: Solid action film that starts too strong for its own benefits.
