Jim Jarmusch recommended American Psycho (2000) in Movies (curated)

"My number one is American Psycho, 2000. A masterful adaptation of words to cinema by Mary Harron, an important American director, and writer. She made Alias Grace, The Notorious Bettie Page, I Shot Andy Warhol, et cetera. This is adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 novel that was set in the 1980s. And I think that the film resonates even more now than when it was made almost 20 years ago. Though at the time it was called sexist filth by some [laughs]. Christian Bale’s performance is brutally riveting, and the entire cast– Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, Reese Witherspoon, and Jared Leto – are all just really good. There’s also an uncut ‘Killer Collections’ edition, which I would strongly recommend. It’s a great film."

I was really surprised by this book. It's a collection of poetry, prose and inspirational artwork. I was really drawn in to the first collection, written as if by Aphrodite herself. The following collections were more personal and hit so many chords for me - they are about being a woman, about worries, about abuse, about relationships with other people, about relationships with yourself and about sexuality. A lot in there was so truthful and raw. Things that need to be said. I actually feel lighter for reading them, as if they have enabled me to let go parts of myself that weighed me down. I would usually turn away from books like this, but I'm glad that I managed to get a copy and read it.

Yesterday, I saw the movie based on the series of short story collections that inspired future makers of horror. It affected me so deeply that I decided to skip a Rifftrax screening. The actual film collects multiple horror tropes: haunted house, creepy hallways, reanimated corpses, spiders, supernatural serial killer, books. Most of the stories startle, but never terrify. The creature designs are phenomenal. The ending is kind of a letdown after all the thrills. However, one story completely disturbed me. Not the story or the creature, but the style. It used a lot of anticipation and narrative, but never showed much of the horror. It just built up tension and had one huge scare leading to a horrifying "ending" for one of the characters.
