I thought this book took an overused, cliche plot and managed to make it into something new, exciting, heart breaking and heart warming. The result of the kidnapping was unlike anything I've read before and so made this a really unique novel for me.

The distinction between Carmel and her mother's narrative was really clear throughout the book and it was written absolutely stunningly, with the description being spot on throughout the book, describing things I know I feel but could never put into words. Beautiful.

I wasn't disappointed by the ending as I've seen other say they were but I feel like chapter 53 could have easily been slashed, it added nothing to the story. The chapter before would have been the perfect, beautiful ending this book deserved, which is why I've only awarded this 4 stars.

I seriously recommend this to all kinds of readers and I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for Kate Hamer in the future.

A twist in every chapter
I usually stick to what I know. I have a favourite authors and I to be honest. I'm scared of trying new things when it comes to crime fiction. It's hard to find a good author who keeps you gripped and has a very realistic storyline.
When I saw this book in my local supermarket It was a boredom 'thing'.
I had nothing to read at home that was new and it 'looked' good, and it was.

The storyline gripped me from the very first page. The twists and turns in this book are so well written and linked in with everything going on that you forget how far into the book you have read.
I finished this book in less than 48 hours. Yes 2 days.
A crime unearthed, but who? When? How?

Trust me. This is a great read and I can guarantee that the very last chapter will have you amazed.

Not a bad book - in the end, it's very slow and politically motivated and also - who cares that much about rugby to have nearly an entire chapter on the subject - I sure as heck dont - if the pace was faster and not such a slow burn I'd have liked it a lot more!

Great story
I couldnt stop reading, it’s a book you just can’t put down. You want to know what happens in the next chapter there and then. Unfortunately I’m borrowing from a library and I’ve only been able to read 2 other books from this series. Need and want to know more!

What a fantastic book! Myth, strong women, magic - what’s not to like?!

I’ll own up now. This was a NetGalley book, and it kind of got left behind. So I listened to the audiobook on Xigxag audiobooks. And I’m SO glad that I did.it came to life for me, and where some reviews have said that they were sometimes a little confused as to whose chapter it was, either Brynhild the fallen Valkyrie or Gudrun, Princess of Burgundia, I had no such issue. The narrators, Eleanor Jackson and India Shaw-Smith WERE Brynhild and Gudrun. And they were both self-assured, strong leaders who would take no nonsense.

What did surprise me was how forgiving Brynhild was of Sigurd lies. If you already know the myth, then you’ll know! Otherwise, my lips are sealed, because you really have to read this for yourself!

Oh, and the Germanic history was the icing on the cake for me. And there’s loads of extra information about both the Norse mythology and the German history, both in relation to the book, on Kate Heartsfields website - chapter by chapter! I’ve had the BEST time on there!

So, yes, this is very much a recommended book!

OMG !!, I just couldn't put this book down. What an emotional roller coaster of a ride from the first chapter to the very last one. Amazing characters, I just fell in love with from the start. Another amazing story from this author. I have definitely been left with a book hanger over with this book. This story is so fantastically written, one minute your are smiling the next you are crying like a baby. I can't wait to read more from this amazing writer in the future.

Very highly recommended
