The protagonist in this story is Holly, a woman in her forties, who got promoted in her job on a TV show. I really like that the author utilizes her knowledge of the film industry throughout her books. I really like reading about “behind the scenes” of film making. This story was a little different than the previous books I read, first of all, there is no man involved in this story, and secondly, it is told from a single (Holly’s) perspective. Even though a single perspective was sufficient to get into the novel, I always liked that Jane Fallon incorporated rivals thoughts as well.
I liked the way the author chose her characters, they were different, interesting and in a way, mysterious. I really liked that the reader can get to know them better throughout the book. Holly was a sweet character, sharing her life story as well as the present events, but she lacked the “revenge” spirit. There were so many juicy discoveries, but Holly didn’t use them, and that was a shame. I loved the twists and turns in this novel, the pages just fly by while reading this book. One thing that truly surprises me is the number of alcoholic drinks the characters consume. How can they even function after downing bottles of wine? The topic discussed in this book is “being a single mother when you get pregnant at a very young age”. Holly’s story is inspirational and I liked that the author outlined the difficulties it can bring.
As I mentioned before, Jane Fallon is a master of what she does, and she definitely knows how to keep a reader “glued” to her book. The language used is easy to understand and the decent chapter length made this novel a very enjoyable read. The ending rounded up the novel very nicely and left me satisfied with an outcome. So, to conclude, Jane Fallon always provides intriguing stories with clever and believable characters, and the plot is filled with office rivalry as well as unexpected discoveries. I'll admit I bought this as a spur of the moment thing from one of my favourite bargain book shops The Works. I've never read anything by this author though I do have her book, "On the Island", to read on my Kindle - and have done for several years now.
This book switches between 1991 and 2001 with almost every chapter after Annika meets her college love for the first time in years, bringing back memories of their time together and making her want to reconnect with him. They meet for coffee and decide to reconnect as friends, going out to dinner later on in the week. Things slowly progress between them and they try again.
The last few chapters of the book take place around September 2001. I honestly had no idea where the author was going with this until the news channel Annika was watching started talking about "a plane crashing into the North Tower" and I'll admit a little shiver went through me.
I'm assuming Annika has some sort of Autism because she has a lot of the same traits as Rikki - from - that I read a little while ago. Doesn't like certain clothing because of how it feels, hates loud sounds, doesn't know how to interact with people very well...etc. In fact this was discussed further on in the book and she is on the Autism spectrum.
I guess people are a bit cruel to those they don't get or understand but I really like how Jonathan always seemed to know what to say and do to ease Annika's anxieties when they were out together. He didn't mind putting his own wants aside to help Annika cope better in situations. They were perfect for each other in that.
I just found the story a little slow and not much seemed to happen in it really. The jumping between months seemed to miss out a lot of their growing relationship and I always feel a little cheated when that happens. I like to read it all.

A shocking double-murder scene greets Detective Inspector Philip Brennan when he is called to a flat in Colchester. Two women are viciously cut open and laying spreadeagled, one tied to the bed, one on the floor. The woman on the bed has had her stomach cut into and her unborn child is missing. But this is the third time Phil and his team have seen such an atrocity. Two other pregnant women have been killed in this way and their babies taken from them. No-one can imagine what sort of person would want to commit such evil acts. When psychologist Marina Esposito is brought in, Phil has to put aside his feelings about their shared past and get on with the job. But can they find the killer before another woman is targeted?
This is definitely a strange one for me! How I got through it I will never know I had to keep putting it down and regather my thoughts. Several times I asked myself do I want to keep going! This is not me taking anything away from the authors as the book was very well written, fast paced with short but well packed chapters. This was difficult for so many reasons dealing with delicate issues. Murder of both women and babies, mutilation , sexual and physical abuse, mental illness on so many levels as well as a few more I missed. The book had this draw to it you didn’t want to go on but you needed to go on! For the first book I. A series it kicks you in the gut straight away! A few times I thought I would physically throw up. So many emotions packed into 438 pages! I needed that last chapter I needed to see him get his woman I think after everything you go through you need that ending!!
Would I recommend this book? Without a doubt but it needs a trigger warning and it’s definitely NOT for the faint hearted!!

Having just finished Time is Running Out, the 7th in this series, and being absolutely blown away by it, I couldn't wait to get my grubby little mitts on this, the 8th in the brilliant Matilda Darke series and I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. What I will say is that I think it would be preferable to have read the 7th book before reading this one as this one picks the story up 9 months later and will provide an explanation as to why Matilda and other characters are acting as they are.
This book follows 3 themes; the aftermath of the massacre that occurred in the previous book, the murder of prostitutes in Sheffield and the long-running theme of the kidnapping of Carl Meagan.
Once again, Michael writes a gripping story that moves at pace. There is violence and edge-of-the-seat moments; I took at sharp intake of breath when the murderer was revealed - I am usually quite good at figuring out who it is but this one absolutely blind-sided me and I actually gasped and said a few choice words that are not repeatable here as I try to avoid profanity in my reviews!
There is also compassion and tenderness and an authentic-feeling description of how grief and tragedy can affect people differently; it can bring you together or completely tear you apart and destroy you and those around you. Everyone is struggling to manage their grief but can they work together to catch the killer or are they too broken?
The characters are just brilliant and I particularly liked how Michael portrayed the prostitutes as "people" rather than the usual stereotypes which made a nice change; I absolutely loved Bev and Sarah. Matilda is, I admit, a difficult person to like in this book but given what she has endured, she is forgiven ... just this once!
Full of tension, suspense and emotion, this book and the series, is one that shouldn't be missed ... roll on number 9!

loved this, cannot fault it!

Sometimes, Ms Sayle writes incredibly dark tales, sometimes they are just plain weird (fingerlings, come to mind) and then there are these kinda books: just a beautifully told tale of two men doing something about the attraction between them, and letting it all happen, while on a cruise.
I loved this book, I cannot fault it!
Victor comes to Sweet Haven to recover and heal after breaking up with his abusive partner. That last scene with them two together is the start of this book. It was not easy reading, what he did to Vic, but I think it was needed to get the full horro of what he had suffered. Very well written, but hard reading. Getting a job with Leeson and Garrett (from the book Sweet Haven, I had to look!) gives him time to heal. It helps that Denton is easy on the eye, but taken. Then Denton isn't and then they are sharing a room on the cruise, and all bets are off!
What I loved about this most, was that, apart from that first chapter, and some reference to Vic's history, there is very little about that history. Sometimes, reliving past trauma takes up a lot of book, but it's been 2 years and Vic is far more confident now about a lot of things. And it shows when dealing with Mr Polished who takes a shine to Denton on the crusie and Vic is "he's MINE"!
I loved that while Denton was spoken for, nothing happened between them. I loved that Denton's ex is Vic friend, but they were able to get past the breakup and still be friends. I loved how fast things moved for these two. But it's been two years that they have lusted over each other, so things were not going to go at a snail's pace!
It's steamy and smexy. It's emotional and it's fun. It's beauitfully written and delivered. I cannot fault it!
I loved it, so bloody much, so it can only get:
5 full and shiny stars!

This is book 2 in the Death's Embrace series and it CANNOT be read as a stand alone, you must read Heart of Dust First.
I said in my review for that book, that I couldn't give it 5 stars, because we only got to hear from Doran. And guess what?? Here, we get Nathaniel too!! Hence the 5 stars!
Because I loved this too! It is a tad more policitical, and it takes a bit more reading. I had to concentrate more, in places, to follow the story line and what was happening but that's not a bad thing for me!
I loved that we heard from Nathaniel. I loved we got a bit more about him and his upbringing and his history and most importantly, his feelings and emotions. We get more of what he did and what's going on with this bloody plant that everyone seems to what and what it will do to Nathaniel, eventually.
There was a conversation about Tsa Lein, and some of that went over my head, the references were subtle and I didn't get them all but it's only a comment I nned to make, rather than a complaint. And I'm not entirely sure what Samuel has to do with anything and it's driving me NUTS that I can't!
Things are moving fast making the mines safe, but not fast enough for some, hence the political issues that are in this book. And I do feel for Grace at points. She needs to be strong, but she really is still young, and a widow. And someone wants her gone.
Which leads us nicely into the next book! There is a bit at the end of this one, chapter one of Throne of Lies and it lays out what's coming, what you SEE coming here. I didn't read it though, I want to wait!
I am fully and totally invested in Doran, Nathaniel, Grace and Tsa Lein. I can't see where it's all going and I both love and hate that I can't!
