Light Perpetual is a wonderful book that takes us on a journey of the alternative lives of five southeast London children. Alec, Ben, Vernon, Jo and Val are all queueing in Woolworths when a German bomb hits. This first chapter about the bomb dropping was stunning. I didn’t think I could read pretty much a whole chapter about the way that a bomb impacts and then explodes AND enjoy it - but it was mesmerising. Then, something changes, and it’s as if the bomb never happens. We are taken on an alternative future, alternative lives for the five children. It’s as if the bomb had never dropped. Life goes on, and these five young children are able to live their lives as teenagers, adults, and in to old age. And what varied lives they lead. Not only do we see what becomes of them, but we experience a significant chunk of the twentieth century with all of the huge changes and the impact on the people that lived through these times.

I loved everything about this book, and I can’t believe that I haven’t read any Francis Spufford before. I shall have to rectify that. In the meantime, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this - it’s just my kind of book.
Many thanks to The Pigeonhole for helping me out with my NetGalley list once again (it happens a lot!), and to Francis Spufford for reading along with us.

Rating: 10/5 (I know that’s stupid, but it deserves it.)

Oh boy.

Starting this book was the highlight of my weekend, I was so excited. I should have waited until next year when I had the third one securely in my hands to have started this one.

The story that was left hanging in The Hunger Games picks right back up again, and drags you into the action from the first chapter. I’m not going to give anything away, but I will say that at times I laughed very hard, and at other times I very nearly cried. Obviously, a book that can make you cry is a good one.

Problem is, I want the third one RIGHT NOW!

From a writer’s perspective, it had a great ending. From a reader’s perspective, I’m very mad at Suzanne Collins right now. Those dreaded words almost killed me: END OF BOOK TWO. Nooooo…….

Read it. that’s all I have to say about that.

Until next time,

~Haley

Great follow up to the first book. (0 more)

Thank God I'm not the only one!
Just like with here first book, Sarah has done another great job being refreshingly honest about the realities as life as a mum.
She knows not all mum's experience parenthood like she does, but for those of us who have found it more of a challenge than we anticipated, it is so nice to have others say the same.
This one has the odd sniping from her social media feeds, a bit by the man behind the mum, and even a chapter from one of the boys perspective.
My main issue with is my only reading time is when (if) my baby naps, so I need to sit quietly, and this book has made me laugh out loud and nearly woken him up on several occasions. I mean, it's like she did not take that into consideration 😂.
What the hell do I read now?!?!
