A tale of Chinese mysticism, set in the river city of Tientsin in early 20th Century China, with a mystic, a forensic scientist, a reporter and a spiritually talented investigator getting together to solve a string of incidents that all build to a final conclusion.
Very well acted, with fabulous locations and gorgeously replicated period clothing and props.
A fantastic storyline that starts out as individual incidents that don't necessarily seem to be connected, but that build to a thrilling cliffhanger finale.
Altogether a great watch.

Easy-going martial arts Jackie Chan/Owen Wilson (and Lucy Liu) film, with Chan portraying the party of a Chinese Forbidden City Imperial Guard soldier who travels to the Wild West of America to rescue the kidnapped Princess Pei Pei (Lucy Liu), and falls in with outlaw Roy O'Bannon (Wilson) along the way.

As a Jackie Chan film, you pretty much know what to expect: lots of martial arts slapstick in his own inimitable style (and pidgin English, which is still a lot better than my non-existent Chinese!) and a few 'that's a terrible name for a cowboy' puns along the way!

Read for Judah's school. Too much focus on him being a misbehaving child. Ya, he had consequences he had to deal with. But just didn't sit well with me. Maybe I'm crazy. But I di like the intro into the Chinese culture for Judah.

"The humor was very appealing to me, and I felt like I got to see locations and aspects of Chinese filmmaking that I’d never been introduced to. The structure and the mixing of genres and techniques kept my filmmaking side alert and well fed."

"Birth defects, ancient Chinese terra cotta figures, the history of clouds, burning questions about suffering, numbers, evil, and time — this strange gem of a book has it all. Each category of thought is a portal, and its structure is a thing of unfolding beauty."

"Sidney Lumet’s film version of Tennessee Williams’s Orpheus Descending, with a script by Meade Roberts (who later played Mr. Sophistication in The Killing of a Chinese Bookie). I love Brando in this, especially that opening speech to the judge, and when he recounts the story of meeting Leadbelly."

"Why did Chinese foot binding end? Or the western pistol duel, for that matter? The Honor Code takes a stab at this history, revealing the importance of honor as an agent for major social and political change — a salient point to make in this morally fraught time of rapid transformation."

I am honestly obsessed with movies/docuseries about fraud in general. Short-selling is a crazy notion to me. The Chinese companies in this series didn't really do a good job of trying to hide their fraud.
It was interesting, but it didn't really hold my attention all that well.
