It's just a pretty good, but not great, movie about an underdog boxer who has to overcome adversity to achieve his dreams.

McKay seems to have been hoping that, if he took a chance and threw every idea he had at this film, something would stick, but the final product is maddeningly inconsistent, and most of what we get didn't stick.

Drama set at the end of the 19th century, starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as warring stage magicians, with able (acting) support from the likes of Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson.
It's just a pity the film is slow, plodding, and has a 'twist' concerning Christian Bale's character that you can see coming from rather early on (although not so much the one with Hugh Jackman's character)

It's a bit of a slow burn, but the entire cast is excellent with their performances and kept me invested. Christian Bale and Harry Melling play well off each other. Melling as Poe impressed me. I enjoyed the murder mystery aspect of it and the reveal at the end was great. Overall, I enjoyed the film.

Watched yesterday my second murder mystery movie of the month after see how they run not as good as that one but there was plenty to laugh at start to finish especially the running gag over Christian bales glass Eye plenty of good performances all around from the cast even an appearance from taylor swift only in at the beginning of the movie sets the plot up. Would I recommend the film yes

Bring westerns back!
I love Christian Bale and I love westerns, so it is no surprise I found this an immensely entertaining film.
It is hard to believe humanity even survived the relentless, bleak, hostile and morose period in American history when native Americans were hunted down, slaughtered and removed from their land. They became equally brutal in retaliation and defending their property.
When Bale (Capt. Joseph J. Blocker) is ordered to transport a dying Indian Chief and former adversary and his family back to Montana based on his dying wish, Bale reluctantly agrees.
Their journey would be marked with heartache, sacrifice and brutality. Bale and his men come under attack and have to band together to survive.
I have seen few westerns which showcase the brutality of the Old West better than this film. Your heart goes out to the men and women left to survive with very little left in their lives to look forward to. Somehow, they manage to carry on and should be inspiring to the rest of us to do the same.

Fascinating!
Brilliant character study by the chameleon, Christian Bale, in one of his best performances hardly anyone remembers.
He physically lost over 60 pounds and is almost unrecognizable playing Trevor Reznik, a factory worker who never sleeps who thinks he may be going insane. The characters he interacts with are all interesting but don't seem to help him on his quest for sanity.
Bale is just superb playing this loser, scumbag character. You are not sure whether to root for him, pity him or loathe him.
I love films like this that may not be completely linear and make you think while enjoying some fine acting.
