"A classic direct-cinema documentary drama made with ordinary people, it demonstrated for me, early on, that even without celebrities documentaries can be as compelling as any fiction film."

On a cinema high after Logan, I went to see Fist Fight. It was amusing, and I did laugh out loud, it isn't going to win any awards though.

"I think probably Seven Samurai, by Kurosawa. I think I saw that when I was about 15 or 16 in the cinema. It’s such a big old chunk of a film, and it’s always a treat to sit down with that movie. It’s so perfectly framed, and perfectly judged; it’s basically the blueprint for most action cinema — expect that it’s much more intelligent than most action cinema. There’s characters in it that hardly only get a couple of lines, but you feel that they’re totally fleshed out. The massive battle scene at the end, which should be completely confusing, is instead just completely clear — you never worry about where you are, you never don’t understand what their plan is — and I think that’s something that you rarely see in cinema now. The closest you get to it, sometimes, is I think in James Cameron’s work — where it’s very, very methodically plotted and planned, and you feel the mechanics of everything that’s been very carefully formulated."

Absolutely awful
I've just left the cinema having seen the highly anticipated movie Hereditary and I'm in shock. Not because it's scary, or unsettling, or any of the other things that so many glowing reviews have mentioned. No, I'm in shock because I don't think I've ever been in a cinema where so many people have walked out throughout the movie from boredom. Where so many people have laughed uncontrollably at scenes which are supposed to be serious and shocking, but are just plain ridiculous. And where so many people have all left the cinema commenting on how shit it was, and what a waste of two hours it was. This was just a complete and utter disappointment.

I liked it, but the hype and the comparison to The Exorcist set an impossible standard, so I was really disappointed.

I was looking forward to seeing this and, once again wasn't quite sure why it had been hyped up as being so scary. I think it's a good film, the cinematography and editing are fantastic, but I was expecting a lot more from it.

I have never heard the cinema so quiet! Nobody dared to eat their popcorn. The quietness made the movie so tense. (0 more)
