A family are driving home after visiting the wives parents, the couple are arguing and are nearly ran off the road as a result of not paying attention. A little while later they pull to a rest stop so their daughter peri can use the toilet, however, upon returning to the car Ray spills his coffee in peris car seat whilst looking for her toy. Whilst he's cleaning up, peri wanders off and falls from a ledge after being scared by a dog. Thankfully she's fine but has severely hurt her arm so Ray drives her to the emergency room as fast as he can. It took a long time and many strange questions to get Peri seen, but after finally being examined the Dr insists on Peri having a CT scan. Ray's wife goes with Peri for her scan whilst Ray stays in the waiting room and that's the last time they are seen.
When Ray wakes up from a nap in the waiting room he asks at the desk how long the scan will be, only to be told that there is no record of Peri ever been at the hospital and not only that, but staff are adamant Ray came in alone. Things get stranger from there as Ray frantically looks for his family.
The movie is quite dark from the hospital scenes onwards and can be quite difficult to see what's happening at times, but it gives atmosphere to the scenes and works well. For a movie full of actors I'd never heard of, the acting was very good too apart from one scene where Peri is falling,you hear her scream but her face is expressionless, that could be an editing error maybe? Who knows?
The movie had lots of moments where I gasped and wondered what was real and what wasn't. At first the ending seemed a little too easy but there is a very shocking twist which left me feeling a little uneasy.

A backhoe unearths a human skeleton buried on Wayne Cheadham’s West Texas ranch. The investigation points a grisly finger at Wayne’s first wife. And so begins the wild ride through twenty-five years of love and heartbreak.

Wayne’s a highly eligible bachelor who runs into trouble, first because he’s naïve, and next because, well, life is unpredictable. He’s a loveable guy with a peaceful outlook. Just about anyone wants the best for him, dang it. To cope with sadness, he arranges for an old steel-girded bridge to be placed in the dry pasture in front of his house. Says it helps him adjust his perspective. Others say it’s the world’s largest yard ornament. He takes in stray emus and abandoned horses and becomes a mentor to a loveable little boy without much family. He sits and ponders his plight at a low-water crossing over the creek.

A cast of characters from the fictional small West Texas town of Sulfur Gap—the staff of a high school burger shop hangout on the Interstate, coffee groups at the Navaho Café, hair stylists from the Wild Hare, a local sheriff and his deputies, and the band at the local honky-tonk—knits together the community surrounding Wayne, and all bring their own quirks. People you’d find anywhere, some with thicker Texas twangs than others.

The town, the ranch, and familiar Texas cities such as San Angelo, Abilene, and Austin provide a backdrop for universal themes of love, grief, and loyalty.

This one starts with Bailey working at the coffee shop where she makes drinks for its regular but unusual breed of customers from humans to pixies to werewolves, adding a pinch of dust to each drink to give them a high. Her nemesis, Chief Quinn, comes in and she makes him a drink before he heads out, taking her boss with him, leaving Bailey to work an 18 hour shift alone. Jealously flares within Bailey as she's had a thing for Quinn since he asked her to find proof of his wife's cheating. When Bailey is asked by Quinn's former brother-in-law to help her find someone, she's reluctant but agrees, and is handed a phone. Only the phone isn't all that it seems setting in motion a series of events that throws her into Quinn's life more than either bargained for.

I enjoyed the first 40% of this more than the latter 60%. The beginning was fun and quirky. I loved the sort of love/hate thing she had going on with Quinn. I enjoyed the banter between her and some of the other cops and it was just up my street. It just seemed their will they/won't they get together thing was concluded too early in the book and I was wondering what the rest of the book would be about. It lost some of its appeal for me after the weird Gorgon vomit scene. And then I just struggled to connect with it again. I soldiered on, determined to finish it.

I also found Quinn's family very complicated. He has almost every type of creature in his family tree from angels to incubus to gorgon but he is very much human and I couldn't keep track of who was who half of the time.

I liked it enough that I'd buy more of this series.
