Colin Farrell as a vampire? He would hardly be my choice as the leading man in this one, yet beneath it all you get the impression that he loved every minute.
As Jerry, the new neighbour who has moved into a quiet suburb deep in the Las Vegas desert, he has all the charm and likeability of any new dweller. That is until his true identity and ambitions are revealed.
Opposite Farrell is Charley (Yelchin), a nerd who has suddenly burst out of his shell and blended in with the upper echelons of high school society. Enough that he has bagged Imogen Poots as his girlfriend.
It’s very much a no brainer when it comes to the plot, but Yelchin does enough in the early parts to keep you hooked in. Battling with his former best friend played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who yet again does the role so well, he suddenly realises that there is more truth to the rumour that Jerry is devouring the locals.
The humour keeps the film ticking along and the introduction of David Tennant as Peter Vincent, a Vegas showman who as luck would have it, has the largest amount of vampire collectables going.
The special effects and gore elements are exciting, but its hardly frightening anyone to the core, which is a shame. If you’re going to do a remake then make sure its executed as well as it can be.
For me though the film is about Farrell, contented with playing the nice guy for the most part of his career its great to see him opening up to a new role. Even his Horrible Bosses turn showed that he had the potential for a badass, and long may it continue.
It’s not a patch on the original, and let’s be fair not a lot of remakes ever are, but its a credible effort from Gillespie. Farrell here sticks two fingers up to Twilight, and I bloody loved that!

Guy Ritchie back to his best
I'll start by saying that I am huge Guy Ritchie fan so am probably a bit biased but I am definitely not blinkered though. I realise that he's made a couple of stinkers, a few average films and a couple of excellent films. I think we can now add the gentleman to the list of excellent films! This is by far the best film Ritchie has made post Matthew vaughan. It's a fast paced film with even faster dialogue, Ritchie hasn't had a cast of characters this interesting since snatch with the highlights being fletcher (Hugh grant), coach (Colin Farrell) and Ray (Charlie hunnam). I personally would love to see a spin off movie about Ray and coach. Overall I would give this a 9/10 excellent film.

Atomic Blonde? Mrs and Mrs Smith? The Long Kiss Goodnight? Not like any of them.
Over the last circa 5 years or so, I've noticed a growing trend of 'beautiful female assassin's' movie (think 'Atomic Blonde'. 'Anna'. 'Mr and Mrs Smith'. 'Red Sparrow').
While the poster for this 2020 production might lead you to think the same of this - as, indeed, did the inclusion of Geena Davis ('The Long Kiss Goodnight') in the cast list - this is actually a very different type of movie, more concerned with the lead character's family dysfunctions than with the action scenes (of which there are only a few).
Overall, I wasn't really that impressed with this - and I'd forgotten how annoying Colin Farrell was - and actually found myself 'tuning out' on more than one occasion.

Easily my favourite comedy of 2011, with Crazy, Stupid, Love. coming a close second. The film is about three guys whose jobs are made hell by their bosses. They decide to kill them in a "Strangers on a train" style, where one kills another's boss so it can't be traced back to the employee. I wasn't sure what to expect from the cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Jason Bateman, Colin Farrell, Donald Sutherland, Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Aniston. Each fine actors but how would they fair in this film? Amazingly is how. Colin Farrell is almost unrecognizable as one of the bosses and Kevin Spacey is great as usual. However the stand out performance of the film is Jennifer Aniston. She plays a dentist, the boss of Dale (Charlie Day) and she is sexually harassing him. She really takes the role and plays it to perfection. Dale is her shy assistant who is engaged to Stacy (Lindsay Sloane). He is faithful to her and resists all advances from his over sexed boss. It is not a role we are used to seeing her play but it is a perfect performance. Another great performance was Jamie Foxx the murder consultant they hire. Horrible Bosses is a great comedy, almost a perfect comedy. The only flaw for me was it was all tied up a little too neatly. I saw the ending coming before it happened and it would have been nice to have an ending a little more surprising. Having said that I can't imagine how it could have been ended differently. The film doesn't have to resort to crude gags and just lets the script and performances of the cast tell the story. This works so well and full credit to the writers for a great comedy.

With the exception of a couple of half decent action scenes, Ava doesn't have much going for it. It's feels generic, it feels phoned in, and above all, it's just quite boring.
It has an engaging enough set up, but somewhere around the half hour mark, it just kind of trails off into limbo, as a pretty stacked cast are subjected to a lackluster script. Seriously, Jessica Chastain is doing the best she can with what she's been given, but considering Ava also stars the likes of John Malkovich, Geena Davis, Colin Farrell, Joan Chen, Ioan Gruffudd - all heavy hitters who don't make much impact. The whole experience is just uninspired.
It's not a complete train wreck, but since John Wick exploded into cinemas, these kind of films have been a dime a dozen, and Ava doesn't do nearly enough to rise above its peers.

Well-mounted but self-referential (and that's putting it very charitably!) look at the origins of Mary Poppins. Pamela Travers (Thompson), who is very British and starchy, flies to Los Angeles where she meets the avuncular Walt Disney (Hanks), intent on adapting her books about a supernatural dominatrix for the cinema. Colin Farrell appears in flashback as Travers' feckless dad; despite what the soundtrack listing suggests, he does not sing 'Chim Chiminee', so manage your expectations.
Nicely made and played, and quite amusing an' all, but hard to escape the impression this is just a massive piece of self-aggrandisement by the House of Mouse: poor old repressed Travers just needs a bit more Disney in her life in order to become happier and more successful, to say nothing of the various factual inaccuracies. But then it's a Disney film actually about Walt Disney, so what do you expect? Watchable stuff, but take a pinch of salt along with the many spoonfuls of sugar.

A charming compendium to Mary Poppins
Having just watched the original Mary Poppins a few weeks ago I was anxious to also watch this film which I had remembered when it was released. I am so glad I did as it was a glorious supplement to understand the history f the film, the reluctance of the original author to sell the rights to Disney and how they eventually convinced her to do it.
The bonus subplot of the author as a young child and the tumultuous relationship she had with her own father so also interesting in the parallels drawn or she must have written about which end up in the final Poppins story and film.
Strong performances by Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson and even the normally annoying Colin Farrell added to the rich story. Watching this film actually makes you want to watch Poppins again because of all the timeless songs.
I just might do that!
