Nathan Lee recommended Videodrome (1983) in Movies (curated)

1983 | Horror, Sci-Fi

"Not my favorite Cronenberg film, but one that works, for obvious reasons, extremely well on home video. This was a pivotal movie for me, the film that bridged my adolescent love of horror and fantasy to a cinema of ideas. Just when, umpteen viewings on, I thought I couldn’t possibly get anything new out of it, Criterion drops the full cut of Samurai Dreams, the exquisite soft core J-porn excerpted in the feature, as an extra. The Criterion Collection, putting the bone in bonus since 1984."

"Of all the titles in the Collection, this may be the one whose content is most radically altered by the shift from film to video, projection to electronic display. What’s lost in translation—flicker, physicality, the sheer thingness of a Brakhage film flung through space—is made up for by our ability to study the intricate compositions, structures, and rhythms in detail. Taken frame by frame, it’s like owning a Brakhage monograph with 350,000 plates. Is Commingled Containers the most beautiful of all films? Yes."

This book is a collection of eight stories, told by an unknown narrator. Every story is empowering and unique. I really liked the strong will and determination these twelve-year-old girls showed. The princesses are diverse, and it was a real pleasure to read about different cultures.

The narratives are always changing, and the mirror is the only thing linking the stories together. I really enjoyed the turns and little twists in each story, as well as a little bit of sweet romance.

Well, that was … unusual.

If you want to know if it's possible to 'take off' by firing enough machine guns simultaneously downwards (it is), or how fast you could hit a speed bump while driving and still live, or what would happen if the moon disappeared …

this is the place to come.

Apparently a collection of material from a website-I've-never-heard-of-before (xkcd.com), this provides - as the name states! - serious scientific answers to these (and other) questions.

A curio read, maybe.
