Irene M (130 KP) rated Infographics for Kids in Books
Dec 7, 2018
I received this book from Toppsta to review
"Infographics help us to understand information, learn and remember it!" ... and this book has that in abundance.
My own first impressions included how wonderful bright and colourful this book was, and the great thick quality of the pages.
Every double-page infographic in the book has something interactive for the little ones to expand on, be it simple colouring in or a question to make them think, and so packed full of informative facts that even if you don't read from cover to cover and just open and point there will be something of interest.
I have two boys so needless to say the fact about a human poop weighing the same as two apples was MOST entertaining and I have a feeling it might get repeated often at school today.
My 8 year old had no problems reading thru the book, my 6 year old only needed help with one or two words, and both showed much glee at regurgitating their new found information with their Dad at the dinnertable even a couple of days after reading the book ... so they definitely did take in the information which is exactly what the cover says.
A great read for all ages.

BookInspector (124 KP) rated Alice in Brexitland in Books
Sep 24, 2020
The main character of this book is, of course, Alice, but this one is very interested in politics, and trying to figure out those strange creatures, which she meets during her travels in this strange place called Brexitland. This book is a political retelling of classic “Alice in Wonderland” using British politicians and Donald Trump (Trumpty Dumpty). Alice is very confused in this book because all the characters talk a lot of nonsense, and when a child tries to correct them, they pour another load of nonsense.
I really liked the story itself, it has some fun twists in it and it is incredibly funny. I don’t remember when the last time I read a book with such great illustrations and silly songs. This book looks like children’s book, but it is an adult read. (well, kids can colour in the pictures if you like). Even though this book is a humoresque read, it has some great deep political monologues in it as well.
I really enjoyed this book, and through humoresque writing, it showed, that British politics is one big, messy hotpot. So if you interested in politics and fed up with those serious debates, grab it, read it, enjoy it, and give it to your kids to do some colouring. Everybody wins! 🙂

Merissa (12358 KP) rated Lost (The Caelian Cycle #1) in Books
May 5, 2023
This book starts off in a sad place as Sadie deals with the death of her friend/boyfriend, Liam. Her other friends are trying to bring her back to the 'land of the living' as she grieves for her loss. Her friends also include the older brother and also the twin sister of Liam, Michael and Lacy. Sadie is a rare one amongst the Caelian's, in a physical way with her lack of colouring, but also in that she doesn't appear to have a 'talent'.
This story is well-written with a steady pace. It will give you an emotional connection as you empathise with the characters and situations they find themselves in.
This is a fantastic debut novel that has definitely left me wanting more. A brilliant story that grips you from start to finish, you will need to know more about Sadie and Kian. Although this story comes to a satisfying conclusion, it also leads you perfectly into the next book which is due out later this year that I have GOT to read. Highly Recommended.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Irene M (130 KP) rated Swat!: A Fly's Guide to Staying Alive in Books
Dec 7, 2018
I received this book from Toppsta to review
It took me a while to review this book because my 8 year old got to it first and I had to pry it out of his sleeping hands to get the chance to read it myself ... I HAD to find out what had him so engrossed and giggling away.
Swat! by Mike Barfield is an educational story about Buzzter, a newly hatched fly, and Professor Hector Halfbottle teaching Buzzter about all the things that he has to avoid because basically everything out there will attempt to kill or eat him.
The book is packed full of wonderfully bright and detailed drawings and information showing the dangers to flies. The Venus Flytrap page has been sponged into the 8yr olds brain as he has gleefully spouted the information to everyone he meets about the small plant we have on the windowsill. Jumping Spiders and Archerfish have also been inspiring (Muuuummm, can you find me a video of a spitting fish?).
I would highly recommend this book for any budding young entomologist, and also to those who are teensy bit scared of spiders to show them what good things spiders can do.
You should also check out his website for extra things like printable colouring pages and fly jokes
