Steph Freeman (26 KP) rated American on Purpose: The Improbable Adventures of an Unlikely Patriot in Books

Another Late Night Memoir
This book was just what I needed to help get me through the pre-holiday slump at work. Craig Ferguson's narration of the audio book felt like sharing a cuppa with a neighbor or an old friend as they shared their life story in an all night conversation. I fell in love with his comedy through the Late Late Show, and have enjoyed following his career ever since. As an entrepreneur it's encouraging to know success isn't perfect, or even planned.

Mix of comedy and science
This podcast, presented by Prof Brian Cox (he of the lovely hair and "isn't everything brilliant" attitude) teams up with angry comedian Robin Ince to present this BBC Radio 4 science podcast looking at the scientific discussions of the day, with guests representing differing viewpoints. Brian's engaging, accessible descriptions of the science involved meet Robin's layman's understanding (though I think he has a better understanding of things than he lets on) and deliver a good, understandable debate on why things matter and why we should be more interested in science.
tapestry100 (306 KP) rated Naughty Mabel Sees It All in Books
Aug 2, 2017
Naughty Mabel makes her return with this second volume, which I found a huge improvement over her first story (Nathan Lane is such a comedy genius, and for him to resort to fart humor, regardless of how funny kids will find it, left me disappointed). This time out, Mabel is seeing things, which makes her inherent naughtiness even worse, and until her parents can figure out why she's seeing things, Mabel continues to wreak havoc. Dan Krall's illustrations are perfect once again, and I'm actually now hoping that we'll be seeing more of Mabel in the future.

Funny and Heartwarming
This movie is based on a true story about a young girl trying to get into the WWE. It had a lot of really great funny moments. Paige isn't the typical girl that the WWE normally hires. She struggles a lot, and I liked that the movie showed how hard she had to work for her dream. I also loved her brothers story line. It showed that sometimes you can't achieve everything you wanted, but you can still live a valuable and happy life. Definitely worth a watch if you're looking for a good comedy.
Awix (3310 KP) rated After Life (Wandafaru Raifu) (1998) in Movies
May 14, 2019 (Updated May 15, 2019)
Curious, gentle comedy-drama fantasy. Newly-dead entrants to the next world must choose their most important memory, as this is all they will take with them into eternity. Those who cannot make the choice remain in limbo, helping those who can (it's a bit like the civil service).
Big themes, obviously, but handled with a very light, naturalistic touch; the machinery of the afterlife has a charmingly shambolic feel to it. Initially seems like a series of quiet character studies, before an understatedly moving story develops between two of the staff. Thought-provoking and rather beautiful.

Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated Final Destination 3 (2006) in Movies
Jun 10, 2019
Unfortunately, Final Destination 3 was an absolute disaster. What’s even more of a shame was that the incredibly talented Mary Elizabeth Winstead had to suffer through such an ordeal.
Moving away from the series’ horror roots and opting for a campy, horror-comedy vibe doesn’t sit well and the tasteless reference to 9/11 only sours the film further.
The main disaster, a rollercoaster accident, is reasonably inventive but lacks the exceptional practical effects that made the motorway pile-up in Final Destination 2 so deliciously enjoyable to watch.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2041 KP) rated It Happened One Knife (Double Feature Mystery #2) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Comedy Theater owner Elliot Freed is thrilled to meet his film idols Lillis & Townes when he hosts a special screening of their classic CRACKED ICE. But when he learns that Townes may have killed his wife 50 years before, Elliot just has to investigate. I was disappointed with the first in this series, but I really enjoyed this one. The characters were more likable, the plot much stronger, and the laughs were present in droves.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) in Movies
Feb 15, 2018 (Updated Feb 15, 2018)
Marvel comedy-SF adventure that gambles big-time (doesn't feature a single character most people will have heard of), wins in spades due to great cast chemistry, effervescent script, and willingness to do something a bit different.
Motley crew of space ruffians meet in prison, find common cause (sort of), must stop would-be despot from causing untold devastation with plot device of ultimate power. Banging 70s and 80s soundtrack, obviously; looks fabulous too. Also strikes a welcome blow for inclusivity and representation of minorities (finally a film includes characters that raccoons and trees can identify with).

Terrific content from a committed and fun host
I have been a follower of all things from the Angry Ginger for a long time. Since his days with TLPS, I have been listening to him spew his brand of comedy. Though the co-host will change from time to time, Jason The Angry Ginger remains the same.
