[Defy the Night] by [Heather and Lydia Munn] was a very telling coming of age story. In fact throughout most of the book I really did not like the main character, Magali. I thought she was selfish and egotistical. I guess that was the point though.

The setting of "free" France during early World War II is something most people are not aware of because it was when most of the world was in denial. The people there fought on silently doing what they could for whom they could. This was not the Resistance as most people know of but perhaps it's predecessor.

The book was very well written and as I stated before the characters definitely had their own personalities. I will be adding this book to my classroom library and recommending it to the school library.

Iconic, and Old, but still great... War still sucks.... especially for kids
This is Spielberg's attempt at cinematography as the primary objective. This film is a visual work of art and you are swept along from beginning to end. Yes, the tale lingers too long in spots and you never know what's going to happen next. But, if you're willing to give up the expected and trivial for lush visual images and interesting showcases of character, you'll see that here. I can't imagine coming of age in the middle of a war, but this movie lets me experience it even if I don't want to and it's still artistic. They say that a ton of great art comes from great suffering... maybe that's why there are so many great films about war.

Speaking of art here's an alternate movie poster.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

While this may not be your typical "coming of age" story as it only takes place over the course of a couple days, I would still term it as "coming into your own".
Wade lives on a farm which has gone to crap since his granddad passed and his stepdad started taking over. Not "taking over the farm", mind you, because he can't be bothered to lift a finger. No, he's just taken over Wade's life, and not for the good.

When we meet up with Wade, it's the date of a school dance and the girl of his dreams as actually asked him to be her date. He should be on cloud nine, right? Well, he is, until his day snowballs into one from Hell. Cue all the ill-timed things which can possibly happen when you're in a hurry and need to look your best, and multiply it by 10 because he's on a farm. How will his night turn out?

Great little story, and I'd definitely be interested to see where this character and author go from here.

I am a huge fan of dry humor and coming of age stories. This movie was a nice surprise, and without too many spoiler trailers out there, I was really not expecting anything. The movie had a great flow, and the interaction between mother and daughter was so real and emotional. The only complaint I have is that the movie was so abruptly ended. I enjoy leaving it open-ended for the imagination, but I feel like the last 15 minutes completely changed the flow of the movie and lead us to believe there was going to be one more reveal that never happens. I didn't need a complete summary, but I did want to know just a little bit more.
