"This film and the Criterion label are synonymous for me. Its beautiful cover art and immaculate menus seem to fit perfectly with its lead character; it’s almost as if Max Fischer himself were unsatisfied with the original vanilla DVD release from Disney and produced a handcrafted one instead. The actual film is a brilliant gem by Wes Anderson, and one that still shines brightly today. Just in the past year, we’ve seen a number of films that walk in the shadow of this one. Of course, it wouldn’t have inspired so many movies, music videos, commercials, and TV shows if it wasn’t such a distinctive effort. This is an undeniable cult classic, one that every Max Fischer on the planet has on their shelf."

Did I fully understand what happened during this wonderful fever dream nightmare? Absolutely not, but what I do know, is that Phantasm is so unique, brimming with wonderful cinematography, creepy as all hell, and has one of the best damn music scores I've ever heard in a horror film.
It's distinguishable aesthetic is complimented by its striking and mysterious villain, The Tall Man, played terrifyingly by Angus Scrimm. Throw in an army of hooded demonic minions, sentient severed fingers, a baseball-sized murderous fly, airborne death spheres that drill through the brain, and a portal to another planet, and the result is a beautifully crafted, if confusing, horror classic that deserves every ounce of it cult status.
Phantasm fucking slaps.

A new Halloween classic
A great collection of Halloween tales that overlap each other on one Halloween night in a small town. It has some great moments in the 4 main stories, mixing up an urban ghost story, scary creatures, slasher and just the plain weird. It has a good cast including Brian Cox looking a little John Carpenter like and Anna Paquin of True Blood. The film also reminds the viewers of the reasons behind some of the traditions. A bit short at 80mins but very enjoyable, one of the best horror anthologies around! This could become a cult film taking into account it didn't get a cinema release....who knows why!? Plenty of extras on the DVD as well.
