A great adventure film, with plenty of big battles and fights. Great performance from Daniel Day-Lewis.

The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
1992 | Drama, Romance, War
Early 90s Daniel-Day Lewis starring Romantic Drama, set during the French and Indian War of 1754-'63, with Day Lewis as the adopted son of a dying native American tribe - the Mohicans of the title.

Lots of weeping panoramic shots throughout, with a rousing (and now - over three decades later - quite famous) musical score, but the film does seem to jump around quite a bit, with little really in the way of character development and, well, things just seemingly happening for no discernible reason at all!

"That to me is the most romantic film of all time, and it makes me cry whenever I watch it. I think that I can credit that film for my hairstyle on Seinfeld back in the day, because I thought Helena Bonham Carter was so exquisite – because she was. And those costumes and that love story, which was so restrained, which made it feel so much more romantic. It’s a very moving story about the love between two people, and I just adored it. And Daniel Day-Lewis gave the most remarkably comedic performance. If you go back and watch that film, which I encourage you to do because it truly holds up – I watched it recently and I was bawling my eyes out – but Daniel Day-Lewis is so f–king funny."

"From the opening shots of Daniel Day Lewis running through a forest in chase of a deer, to the finale when he’s sprinting across a mountain to protect his brother, this is my kind of romance – men and women living upon the earth, fighting for love, and willing to die for nothing more than honor. It may not be the ‘greatest love story’ ever told, but when Day Lewis promises to find Madeleine Stowe’s character, no matter where she goes, before jumping off a waterfall, that’s one of the great scenes in cinema history. Kudos to Michael Mann."

"Last of the Mohicans was like my childhood favorite. I love that movie. The soundtrack to that is probably one of my favorite in the world. My favorite movie is probably the life of Daniel Day-Lewis. If you watched Gangs of New York, it sucked, but then you see him as Bill the Butcher, it’s unbelievable. You really want to say Gangs of New York because he’s so amazing, but then you want to say There Will Be Blood. I mean, really, he’s so amazing. My Left Foot, Last of the Mohicans; the guy is just a freak of nature. He’s like a national treasure. That’s what he should be considered. Mindblowing, absolutely mindblowing. I can’t wait to see him play Lincoln. Anything Daniel Day-Lewis is in, that’s pretty much my favorite movie."

Gangs of New York (2002)
2002 | Classics, Drama
Intriguing story of the internal battle to control the poor and immigrant controlled areas of a bustling and dangerous early New York.
Di Caprio is very good here as the avenging son of a gang member under the wing of William Cutting played by Daniel Day Lewis who for me steals this one as the crazy anti immigrant gang leader.

"What other great films are there? Ah, for God’s sake, There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men. I saw those films that year, back to back. Just outstanding work by director, writer, producers, actors. Captivating, both men: Javier Bardem and Daniel Day Lewis — just iconic. Every time he steps on the stage, you know, you can’t take your eyes off the guy. And both films sit on the bookshelf as bookends, really, to that special year of film making."
