It's helped of course by a brilliant performance from Mads Mikkelsen. His quiet mild mannered Lucas is a million miles away from what he gets accused of, and Mads' performances itself is very restrained, which is exactly what this film needed. This paired with a subtle score and well done cinematography make for a very haunting watch.
This really has a stark point to make about the judgemental nature of society, and it makes it very well, even if it is disturbing to watch.
There are many storylines as each main characters backstory gets explained in a separate episode, via short flashbacks. I really enjoyed this as it was nice to get to know the other characters not just Simone and Rasmus.
As with any good teen drama there is love, jealousy and heartbreak, as the teens deal with the addition of Simone and Rasmus to their group and everything they have been through since the deadly rain began.
It is obviously a Danish series so it has been dubbed with English voices which just means the speech and voices don’t always match up, however I quickly stopped noticing.
My one criticism would be the ending as it seemed very anti climactic. I’m not sure if this was because they were uncertain if there would be a season 2 or not. However it would not stop me from recommending the series.

I don't think I'm giving anything away when I say that we're now (well) past the death of Alfred (the only English monarch to ever be given the epitaph 'the Great'), with Uhtred now in late middle-age (for us), and still eager to reclaim his ownership of Bebbanburg.
The novel, however, concerns itself more with raids made by Ragnall Iverson, with his motives initially unclear: does he come to rape and pillage? To attack Chester? To take control of the Danish kingdom of Northumbria?
Ragnall, however, is related to Uhtred through marriage, so his loyalties remain in doubt to the rulers of the land, with Uhtred eventually disobeying orders and sailing to Ireland (and back), for reasons that become clear in the plot.
Another strong entry in the series; perhaps not the strongest, but still pretty good.
