I am all smug contentment on finishing SPINNING SILVER, the ending was utter completeness. This is a complex fantasy novel, definitely modelled in the background by a dark fairytale that would be familiar to any reader.

The book starts off with a female protagonist Miryem, such a young woman of determination, focus, self-belief and strength. What happens is that slowly, as the tale unfolds, two other female characters Wanda and Irina join the tale to be key storytellers. I absolutely loved the slow revealing of these other lead characters. All three females had experienced difficult childhoods in different ways which I believe led to their tenacious characters.

What is pretty hilarious is that nearly every single male character is a total tool. They are almost too numerous to be named but I have to speak of Mirnatius and the hideousness of his character, even though there is more to it than that. The King of the Staryk needs particular mention because although I should have hated him, I didn’t. He captivated me and drew me in. Frustratingly, despite the physical description, I couldn’t quite paint a picture of him. I loved reading about the Staryk, the kingdom, the people. I just couldn’t hate this King.

SPINNING SILVER was complicated in many ways, sometimes confusing but ultimately enlightening if I just waited to put the pieces together. The description of people, sights, sounds and the environment were seamlessly brought to life. The tale itself was easy to slip into from the first few pages and although I experienced a plodding sensation at two thirds of the way, it picked up again.

Naomi Novik has followed up from UPROOTED and given us a tale to rival and match but with a very different feel and context. I thoroughly enjoyed my reading journey and I can’t wait to discuss this with my friends.

So I received Dark Aemilia from a Goodreads give away. All I can say is how lucky I was to receive such a good book, that otherwise I likely would not have taken a second glance at. This is a beautifully written piece of historical fiction. Which at its core, is a love story, between Aemilia Bassano and William Shakespeare. How their love blossomed and through many external factors was pulled apart. The book is laid out in acts and scenes like a play and tells the story from Aemilia point of view. I enjoyed being submerged in the Tudor London at the end of Elizabeth I reign. This book completely grabbed me from the start and had I had more free time I am sure I would have read this book in a day or two.

Unfortunately as I haven’t ever read historical fiction before I don’t really have any point of reference for comparison. But what I will say is that I thoroughly enjoyed how realistic this book felt, but still was able to bring in completely fictitious elements of magic and witchcraft. Sam O’Reilly has managed to bring in these elements, which appealed to my love of fantasy, without being over the top. I particularly enjoyed the time when London was under the grips of the plague and thought it was just so well written and explained. At no point did I feel lost in descriptions, I was there, with Aemilia and that poor woman just couldn’t catch a break.

There is ‘mature content’ it is an adult story of love, so yes there is sex. I personally have no issue with this and believe it to be an integral addition to this story. It is done well and doesn’t feel forced or overdone. I am struggling to put into words how much I enjoyed this book, I will read it again and I would recommend it. I will now even consider reading other historical fiction that I had not thought I would enjoy.

LYNX is the first book in the Wild Wolves MC series, set in the East Midlands, UK, which was my old stomping ground. I can't tell you how happy I was to read something set there, even if it is a fictional place.

Annabelle Jacobs writes brilliant British Urban Fantasy, and this one is no different. In a world where humans don't know about shifters, the pack came together as a group of outcasts and misfits, using the MC as a cover. Morgan is as human as they come, but his life changes in almost unrecognisable ways, starting off with his dad losing their home to gambling. Think of a snowball mixed in with personal choices, and you will see how it gets bigger as it rolls downhill.

I loved the relationship between Lynx and Morgan, and then between the two of them individually and the rest of the pack. This isn't a warm and fuzzy book, but it isn't unnecessary angst either. Everything that is in here is for a reason, and I was completely hooked with every word.

Although the time it is set in is quite fast, I found the pacing to be perfect, giving time with the pack, Morgan, and Lynx in between the action. It was a mix of dark (fight rings), emotional (Lynx and Morgan, Morgan and Luke, etc.), and funny (comments between the pack members), so if that's what you enjoy, I think you will love this.

There are a couple of possible couples that I'm hoping for, together with characters I want to find love, and I honestly can't wait for the next book, no matter who it features. Another fantastic world to lose myself in. Absolutely brilliant and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me.
