Gripping and gritty
Not normally a fan of British drama, I was persuaded to watch this based on the hype surrounding it and my wife being told by everyone at work how good it was. The first episode was exceptional TV - gripping, tense and realistic with strong characters outlined early on. For me, this was the peak, as PS David Budd (Richard Madden) acts on his suspicions over someone boarding his train.
From there on, Budd becomes embroiled in politics (as the protection officer for the outspoken Home Secretary) and a series of conspiracies. Right up until the final episode, there was a definite feel of early Homeland about this, as you are constantly trying to work out whether Budd is in on it, as the evidence suggests, or is honestly trying to stop the terrorists or find the culprits.
A few clumsy moments here or there that took the edge off for me (most notably certain people suddenly admitting everything under the lamest of police interrogations, but also more practical things like switching radio channels with only one hand).
Overall, Madden was a strong main actor, but as with a number of Scottish actors I find their need to soften their accent comes across as bad, less natural acting and it is hard for me to see past this.

Best British drama in a long time
I don't really do British tv dramas, mainly because most of them are all very similar or just not my cup of tea, however after the hype surrounding this, I decided to give it a chance.

This is by far the best British drama I've seen in a long time (albeit I may not have seen many recently). Richard Madden is superb as David Budd and I really hope he goes far with his career. There's Bond rumours flying about (although to be fair those same rumours are fixed to every British actor within a certain age range) and i honestly think he would make a great Bond as long as he doesn't go with his native Scottish. The story itself is interesting and there are some fantastic twists and turns. Some of it may be a tad predictable, over the top and cliched - I almost stopped watching after episode 2 when the bodyguard slept with his ward - and you have to suspend your disbelief in parts. If only real police work in the UK was this dramatic! However I was particularly impressed with the final episode. Never before have I felt so tense and terrified watching a British drama, the tension and suspense in this episode alone was marvellous. The final scene itself was a tad disappointing as I'd expected a little more action, but the rest of the episode and series more than made up for it.

I'm the same - not usually a fan of British dramas. This was very good though. A few unresolved plot points in the final episode but I read today that they're looking to do at least another series, possibly another three!

Really? Whilst I know there was a few unresolved things, I’m of the opinion that less is more when it comes to more series ?

Do whatever you do with conviction. Always.

This is my first Carnoy novel but I’m definitely going to check out his others. Lucidity did not give up all its secrets at once! It was incredible at leaving you guessing what was going to happen next and being able to come up with your own theories on what was going on. That being said, it was still fast paced and exciting enough to keep you hooked. I only say this when I really mean it, but this was unputdownable! I liked the mix of morbidity, mystery and wit in this novel. It had a good mix of all three that made for some excellent, fast paced reading.

To begin with, I wasn’t so sure how the two stories connected. When, at 50%, the stories still hadn’t really crossed I was a bit unsure if I was going to understand how the separate plots worked together. However, be patient! It’s well worth the wait! Even though there are parts that can be predicted, this doesn’t take away from the excitement of reading about it.

The characters in this novel are really well executed. Even though I hadn’t read any of the other books featuring Madden, I didn’t feel like I didn’t know him. When you go into a series midway, even when they’re standalone books but with the same characters, you often find yourself a little bit lost on the mc as you don’t have their history. This wasn’t the case here. Madden was well introduced and maintained throughout the read.

Fremmer was a fun character to get to know. It’s not often that you get a character like him in a novel. He was intelligent and quick witted, but he was also arrogant and a little bit self absorbed, so it’s amazing how likable he still was.

The only negative thing I have to say is that the ending got a little cheesy which felt out of place when compared to tone the book kept throughout, but it wasn’t that much of an issue.
