The Secret Admirer is the 6th book in Carol Wyer's Detective Natalie Ward series. I enjoyed books 1 - 4 and was surprised to learn I had missed the 5th, The Blossom Twins. I read it before beginning this and I am so glad I did.
Detective Natalie Ward is immediately thrust into a case after she returns to work. A student is found dead from an acid attack. As Ward has learned, everyone has secrets. Now, she has to uncover the secrets surrounding Gemma and her murder.
All of the books in the series focus on a crime and the police team's interactions with each other and with their home life. This book continues the storyline well. Ward's family, the team and their families continue to be a large presence in the story.
Often, I will say you could start the series with the current book but you would not understand the characters as well. This is true here but Wyer brings the characters to life in such a way it feels she is writing about real people. I strongly encourage you to read the whole series and start at the beginning. You will be in for a great read.

I’ve fallen in love with Key West thanks to this series, and I was happy to be back. Sadly, the mystery was very weak. Even the characters got frustrated by their lack of progress throughout the book. Plus, the victim was a little too evil, with a few things that felt thrown in just to make other characters feel virtuous. The book gets a little dark and edgy for a cozy as well. Finally, there’s a subplot that comes across as half-baked, the characters involved definitely deserved better. On the other hand, I really did enjoy the location and the series regulars. Nathan, Hayley’s husband, gets some good development thanks to a visit from his estranged father. If you are new to the series, this isn’t the book for you, but fans will enjoy catching up with the characters.

This story based around Will Trent (a GBI agent) and medical examiner Dr Sara Linton, is as dark and unsettling as the other books I’ve read. When the GBI is called in to investigate the death of an inmate during a penitentiary riot, another inmate, Daryl Nesbitt, offers them information about a series of terrible attacks, sexual assaults and murders of women in Grant County. Murders and attacks which almost exactly mirror the murders that he was convicted of and that he claims that he didn’t commit. He claims that Sara’s dead husband, Chief of Police Jeffrey Tolliver, and his fellow officer, Lena Adams, framed him.
There is enough in what he says for them to start looking in to past cases and to follow up on a more recent death.
No matter how gore-filled these books are, it’s never done in bad taste. The characters have respect for the dead women (I don’t think I’m giving too much away when I say it’s ‘women’, as in ‘more than one’), and they, to some extent, treat suspects with restraint. I really liked the extended flashbacks to Jeffrey Tolliver. They’ve certainly made me want to read more of the Grant County books.
I’m really glad that The Pigeonhole have serialised the last couple of Karin Slaughter books, and selfishly, I really hope they continue to do so! If you’re already a fan of Karin Slaughter books, you’ll understand. If you haven’t read any yet, what are you waiting for?
