The Chocolate Lady (94 KP) rated The Lido in Books

They say “it takes a village to raise a child,” but further to that, I think it takes a worthy cause to build a community. Libby Page’s debut novel “The Lido” is about the fight to save a local swimming pool that brings two women together in this common struggle, despite the sixty-year age difference between them. You can read my review of this book that is being called the “feel-good debut of the year” on my blog here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2018/08/11/diving-in-together/

In this debut novel, author Moriel Rothman-Zecher delves into both the political and the emotional conflicts that can exist between Jewish and Palestinian Israelis. However, despite the gravity of this subject, the author gives us a novel that is expressively written, that is important reading for anyone who wants to better understand the people behind these tenuous struggles. You can read more about this book in my review here.

I believe this is a debut novel and if Iam correct it was an great start! I loved the uncertainty of the main character and the fact that she made mistakes. It made it way more realistic. The flow of the story went well and was very readable. I hope there is more to come from this author.

Have we found another Ondaatje? J.R. Crook's debut novel might just remind you of his style, but is ultimately unique. The brevity of the book does nothing if not emphasize the power of the prose and impact of its meaning. You can read my review here https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2015/04/08/a-dream-within-a-dream/
The Chocolate Lady (94 KP) rated My So-Called Ruined Life (Tate McCoy, #1) in Books

If you were only 16, your mother was murdered, and your father in jail for the crime, you probably wouldn't have a clue how to handle it, but that's exactly what Tate McCoy has to do. Read my review of this beautiful YA debut novel by Melanie Bishop, here https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2014/05/07/finding-buoyancy/

This follow up to A Dark Lure did not disappoint. Set in the same area, it revisits a few characters from the debut but is almost entirely a stand alone novel. It was exciting and thrilling, just like it’s predecessor. The characters were well rounded and had the depth and realism that make a great novel. I wish the “initial” case had been delved into a bit deeper but I was very happy with the story and all its components. Can’t wait to see what comes next!
