I listened to The Devil and the Dark Water on Audible, read so well by Julian Rhind-Tutt. HIs voice suited this story so well, and it transported me on to the ‘Saardem’, which had left Batavia, en route to Amsterdam. The sights, the smells, the business, the people, the chaos, were all so well described. And then a leper appears on top of some packing crates, loudly issues a warning that the ship will end in ruin - and bursts in to flames. Sarah Wessel, the Governors wife and a healer, tries to help him but he dies - and this is where it starts to get really strange. It transpires that the leper had no tongue. So how did he speak?

Once the boat has begun its journey, the really menacing things start to happen. A demon called Old Tom makes his presence felt, along with his threats, and the Three Unholy Miracles he promises seemingly come to pass.

On board is the infamous detective Samuel Pipps - except he is imprisoned and on his way to be executed in Amsterdam. His Bodyguard, Arent Hayes, has been employed to ensure his safety (by Pipps) and he asks his advice when he can. But it seems that Pipps’ invaluable detecting skills will go largely untapped. It’s up to Arent.

I loved the menace that runs through this book. Now, I don’t believe in Demons, but even I was wondering when it would appear! And there was NO way that I was EVER going to guess the ending (I would be interested to hear whether anyone else did!).

It’s a great book: full of adventures of the High Seas, with ruthless sailors, soldiers and passengers!

Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
1980 | Fantasy, Sci-Fi

"Absolutely blown away by the world of Star Wars, Empire and Jedis. [But] my favorite moment of the three is actually in The Return of the Jedi. And I argue this with people who are real Star Wars freaks. “Ewoks ruin the movie.” If you’re going to trifle over Ewoks, and you’re not going to talk about how great the speeder bike scenes through the redwood forests are, then f–k off. Those are some of the greatest action sequences… Okay, yeah, there’s some cute critters to sell merchandise. [But there’s] some [scenes] that I couldn’t even dream up with these unbelievable hovercrafts and modern-looking Stormtrooopers. And Jedi has the best moment. [It’s] at the very end when the Emperor is trying to pull Luke over and, of course, Luke is getting the s–t kicked out of him and getting electricity blown at him. And Luke finally takes his lightsaber and throws it aside and says, “No. I’ll never join you. I’m a Jedi like my father before me.” And the Emperor says, “So be it…Jedi.” And it was the fact that the f–king devil himself gave Luke props and called him by [who] he was. It empowered him. That always gets by people, but that’s my stand-out moment. But Empire, when that movie ended in a cliffhanger, my life was a cliffhanger. Until the next one came out, you couldn’t talk to me, you couldn’t talk to me, dude. I was hanging out with my Ungnaught action figures. Everything in my life went back to, “What do you think is going to happen next to Han Solo?” I promise you, you talk to my family and they will go, “Dane was bananas.”"

The Devil in Disguise is the fourth book in the Broken Halos series, and MUST be read as part of the series, or it just won't make sense. With the help of her new-found friends, Hel is back on earth, but that's where the good news ends. Earth isn't at all how it is supposed to be, and Eric is still unconscious. Not only that, but things aren't looking too good as Hel and the others try to get one step ahead of Mammon and his crew.

If you follow my reviews, you will know that I am an avid fan of Maya Daniels. She hasn't written a bad book yet, and no matter what the storyline is, she manages to suck me in. It is the same with this book! Hel and Eric still remain my favourite couple, but I really want to know what is going on with Maddison and Leviathan!! Beezlebub is a firm favourite, and I adore how he interacts with Hel. My heart does ache for Raphael in this book though, so consider yourself warned.

With no errors that disrupted my reading, I was thoroughly engrossed in this story and, once again, found it to be over far too quickly. Not that the story is short, just that I didn't want it to end. A fantastic storyline with characters and situations to love, plus a sexy time. I am loving this series and have no hesitation in highly recommending it.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Envy.

Such an ugly sin.

Yet, here I am guilty of it.

See, I envy you.

You who wake up in the morning not knowing what your future will entail. A blessed uncertainty filled with hope and mystery, with the potential to make it whatever you aspire it to be.

Must be nice — to open your eyes and dream of such a promising existence.

I have no such hopeful misguided notions.

My fate has been written down on crumpled paper, made smooth and immaculate by bloody tainted hands for the outside world to behold, since the day I was conceived.

There is no happily ever after for me but I’ve come to terms with my gilded golden cage long ago.

It’s their destiny that keeps me up at night — the pieces of my soul.

They are the ones who I would defy the devil himself for and stare true evil in the eye, taunting it to do its worst.

There is nothing I wouldn’t do for them, yet I know the wheel of fortune is not in our favor.

So, yes — I envy you.

While you dream of your colorful tomorrow, I dread its grayish arrival.

You see, we were all born rotten.

And rotten girls and boys don’t deserve a fairytale ending.

Rotten Girl is the first book in the duet -A Rotten Love

Sssoooo good

I loved this duet. Felt so good to finally see Selene home with her men! There is something to love in each of her men. I think I internally cheered when butcher was taken out,I'm also glad it was by her hand with both him an Ciro . Ivy Fox has a really good writing style that keeps you gripped from start to finish.
